Alfred Hines Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Judkins Colonial Home - Plainfield on Oct. 1, 2025.
Alfred Earl Hines passed away peacefully at Overlook Hospital with his family by his side on
Monday, September 29, 2025, at the age of 81.
Alfred was born on May 1, 1944, in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, Campobello Township.
He was the son of the late Addie Lee (Simpson) and John Franklin Hines of Rutherfordton, North
Carolina. Alfred grew up in Polk County North Carolina with his 13 brothers and sisters and
attended Polk County Public Schools. After graduating Carver High School in 1963, Alfred
migrated to New Jersey and began working at Summit Oaks Hospital. At the suggestion of his
Uncle Nathaniel Hines, Alfred began working at General Motors Corporation until he retired.
Alfred met and married his true love, Margery Vernece Larmonie on March 11, 1967, at Wallace
Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church where he became a long-time member. Shortly after Alfred and
Margery were wed, they settled in Summit, NJ where their daughter, Nicole Micheline was born
and raised.
Alfred served in the Army in the Vietnam War. He was awarded the National Defense Service
Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Palm, Expert Rifle Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam
Campaign Medal w/ Device and Vietnam Campaign Medal w/4 Bronze Service Stars. He was
proud to be a Vietnam Veteran and would always wear his Vietnam Veteran cap.
Alfred had a love for fixing things, especially cars. He was very handy with tools and could fix
anything. He graduated from Lincoln Technical Institute of Union, New Jersey receiving a
diploma in Automotive Technology in April 1977. Because he aspired to move up in General
Motors Corporation, Alfred enrolled in Middlesex County Vocational and Technical Adult School
in East Brunswick, New Jersey and became certified in Machine Shop in April 1988. He then
became a Machinist and was certified in all branches of the Machinist Trade in June 1988.
Alfred loved gardening. He would plant flowers around the house as well as various vegetables
in his garden. He learned how to garden from his father-in-law, the late Gaston Gerville
Larmonie.
Alfred loved and cherished his family. He was a devoted husband and father who showered love
on his wife and daughter. He took care of their home and provided them with a happy life. They
spent quality time together, especially when he took them to North Carolina for family reunions,
where they fellowshipped and had fun times.
Alfred is survived by his loving family; his devoted daughter, Nicole Micheline Hines; brothers
Bobby L. Hines, George Hines (Barbara), Calvin Hines (Veotis), Terry Hines (Linda), Donald R.
Hines (Sabrina); sisters Gladys J. Garris (Ben), Mary L. Staley (Earl), Catherine M. Gethers
(Ronnie), Alice F. Jones, Pathy Davis (Vincent), Barbara A. Kincaid and a host of loving family and
friends.
Alfred was pre-deceased by his parents, John F. Hines and Addie L. Hines, wife, Margery L.
Hines, siblings Johnny L. Hines, Larry N. Hines, Linda K. Wilkerson and Jerry Hines.
