Alfred George Martin Jr

Alfred George Martin Jr., 86, passed away December 9, 2025, concluding a life rich with family, service, and community involvement. He was born on April 15, 1939, in Maspeth, Queens, New York, to the late Alfred George Martin Sr. and Florence Martin, and was older brother to Gary Martin and Adele Weremychek.
A proud patriot, Al served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1960 to 1964. Shortly after his honorable discharge, he married the love of his life, JoAnn Obergfell, on July 18, 1964. The couple settled in Central Islip, New York, in 1967, where they raised their three children.
Al dedicated two decades of his professional life to the Central Islip School District, working there from 1976 until his retirement in 1996. He was a deeply engaged community member, giving his time generously as a Boy Scout leader, a Girl Scout leader, and an active member of the Knights of Columbus. He had a passion for sports, including his enthusiastic love for his favorite team, the New York Mets, playing golf, and playing on his own team within a men's travel softball league he founded.
Following the passing of his beloved wife, JoAnn, in 1996 after 32 years of marriage, Al retired and relocated to Tarpon Springs, Florida. In Florida, he continued to embrace life, working for Enterprise Rent-A-Car, playing golf, and traveling. He enjoyed the companionship of his longtime friend, Blanche, and embraced the quiet lifestyle of senior living.
In 2020, seeking to be closer to family, Al moved to Elizabeth City, North Carolina. He spent his final years enjoying time with his youngest daughter's family, attending his grandchildren's sporting events and activities, and traveling with them. He found simple joys in the company of his cat, Babe.
Al is survived by his sister, Adele Weremychek; his three children and their spouses: Alfred George Martin III (Kellie Martin), Mary Elizabeth Bailey (Bill Bailey), and Helen Frances Coulter (Travis Coulter). He also leaves behind five cherished grandchildren: Corey Martin, Liam Bailey, Jack Bailey, Ryan Coulter, and Ella Coulter.
In accordance with his wishes, no public services will be held. His family will be gathering privately to honor his memory and celebrate his blessed reunion with his wife, JoAnn.
