Alfred "AJ" Matthews Sr.

Alfred "AJ" Matthews, Sr., entered peacefully into eternal rest on Thursday, March 7, 2024, at the age of 82. He was a native of Minden, LA and a resident of New Orleans, LA. Alfred was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School Class of 1960, and a retired employee of Plaquemines Parish Government. He was a faithful member of Regular Baptist Church, and a former member of First House of Prayer Baptist Church. Beloved husband of 59 years to Mary S. Matthews. Devoted father of Alfred (Pertrina) Matthews, Jr. and Angela Matthews. Son of the late Roosevelt Matthews, Sr. and Bertha Newell. Brother of Carolyn (Edward) Ellis, and the late Sherman Matthews, Annie B. Joyner, Roosevelt Matthews, and Jacob Matthews, Sr. Godfather of Jacob Matthews, Jr. Brother-in-law of Mildred Palmer; also survived by 9 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of West Jefferson Hospital, Reliable PCA and SIL Agency, Omni Home Healthcare, and Foundation Hospice for the professionalism, dedication, and compassion shown to our loved one. A. Hodge, officiating. Visitation will begin at 9:00a.m. until service time at the church. Interment: Providence Memorial Park Cemetery-Metairie, LA.
