Alice Elizabeth Johnson, 91, of La Porte, IN, passed away on February 1, 2025 at Northwest Health-La Porte.
Alice was born on February 18, 1933 in East Chicago, IN, to Perry and Stella (Garrison) Black.
On April 12, 1952, in Hammond, IN, she married Melvin Johnson who preceded her in death. Surviving Alice are her children, Kathy Corbett of Indianapolis, Cynthia (Brian) Swanson of La Porte, and Keith (Judy) Johnson of La Porte; 3 grandchildren, Sheila (Kevin) Ryczek, Byron Corbett, and Kayla Johnson; and soon-to-be great-grandson Ryczek.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sons, Bruce and Terry Johnson; siblings, Jeanette Carey, Carl Black, and Carol Black; and the last man in her life, her beloved cat, Leo.
Alice attended Purdue University, where she worked as a phone operator. While at Purdue, Alice earned her P.H.T., which she affectionately referred to as "Putting Hubby Through"!
For many years, Alice worked in the pharmacy department at La Porte Hospital. She enjoyed teaching Sunday School classes and attending her women's Bible study group. For many years, she attended the Praise Gathering in Indianapolis.
She enjoyed spending time outdoors, feeding birds their favorite seeds and planting flowers to create a beautiful landscape. Her artistic hand was not only noted in her flower beds, but also through her tole painting, which she often gifted to others, and beautiful ceramic creations.
Alice participated in a quilting group. Her skillful hands lovingly created quilts for each of her children and grandchildren. Each quilt is a cherished gift. She also enjoyed sewing, making halloween costumes for many of her grandchildren.
She was a great cook, who enjoyed cooking for others. Alice often prepared meals for those struggling with illness or those with a recent death in their family.
She will be fondly remembered for being selfless. Alice thought of others, before herself, had a giving heart, and gave the best gifts that could be cherished forever. She was a skilled pianist. Her family would often request her to play The Boogie Woogie!
