Alice Kootstra passed away peacefully on September 15, 2025, at the age of 98. Born in Sibley, Iowa on April 3, 1927, she was the third of nine children to George and Jennie (Hager) Kramer.
Northwestern Iowa was home to Alice during the dust bowl and great depression. In 1936 her family moved to Bellflower California and in 1940 they moved to Artesia before the final move to Modesto where she met John. They were married for 62 years before John passed away in 2013.
Besides the raising of 6 children on a small farm near Salida, Alice was kept busy canning and drying fruit as well as working in the field harvesting almonds and walnuts.
Alice enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, knitting, fishing, books, and especially the regular Friday night cards games with Jim and Josie Vander Plaats.
She was a member of the Modesto Christian Reformed Church until joining Immanuel Christian Reformed Church after moving to Ripon in 2007 and then transferring to First Presbyterian Church of Ripon. As her eyesight began failing and she became less mobile, she attended church on-line and would listen to her Bible on tape.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband, John, her parents George and Jennie Kramer, sisters Tena Kramer, Josie Vander Plaats, Henrietta Vis, Sylvia Hannink, Jacoba Kramer, brothers Jake Kramer, John Kramer, granddaughter Kay Kootstra.
Alice is survived by her brother Ted (Theresa) Kramer, her daughter Linda (Patrick) De Jong, her sons Ken, Bob (Marie), Rod (Vicky), Darrell (Carla), and Brian (Laura); 17 grandchildren, and 36 great grandchildren.
The smiles and hugs she greeted visitors with will be missed - they will be but precious memories until Jesus comes again.
Graveside service for family is planned for Monday, October 6, at 10:00 AM followed by an 11:00 AM Memorial Service at First Presbyterian Church of Ripon.
The family is thankful that she was able to live at and in home settings for her final years. In lieu of flowers please consider sending remembrances to Agape International Missions (AIM), Living Water World Missions, and 99 Farmers, all organizations which Alice faithfully supported.
