Obituary of Alice S. Littler
Alice (Stenson) Littler passed away peacefully on July 3, 2025 at the age of 73 at Sunset House in Irondequoit from complications due to stroke and Parkinson's disease. She was surrounded by love and will be remembered for her strength, kindness and tenacity.
Born in Broad Channel, New York, Alice grew up around the waters of Jamaica Bay and Rockaway Beach. She moved from the city to upstate New York for college. She met many of her life-long friends at SUNY Brockport, graduating in 1974. Her goal after graduation was to become a teacher, but realized she was better suited for government service. Alice worked for the NYS Department of Labor for over 30 years, retiring in 2010 as a Labor Standards Investigator.
A long-time member of the Irondequoit United Church of Christ, Alice participated in various church ministries including bible study, resettling refugee families, taking the girls choir overseas and volunteering with several musicals. Her favorite summer church activity was participating in the church's annual strawberry festival.
Alice shared her love of the outdoors and history with the local Girl Scout troop she led for many years, up through Juniors. During that time, she organized many trips to local girl scout camps and Rochester-area businesses.
Alice was an avid camper, hiker, kayaker, skier and cyclist. She always wished her daughter shared her love of downhill skiing, but settled on the family's enjoyment of cross-country skiing each winter. While not fond of cold water, she enjoyed swimming, particularly at a beach. Alice also shared her love of travel and adventure with her daughter, and the two were fortunate enough to travel together on several occasions, including to Turkey, England, the Netherlands and Italy -- and a cross-country driving adventure when her daughter moved to Seattle.
She loved cats and had several during her life, each with their own unique names that matched their personality.
Alice never shied away from a challenge, picking up mahjong in her later years. While it didn't come easy for her, she enjoyed the camaraderie with friends.
Alice didn't let Parkinson's disease define her: she exercised regularly at the local gym, rode her bike, and joined Rock Steady Boxing.
She is predeceased by her parents Albert and Marie. She is survived by her husband Michael, her daughter Caryn, her sister, Caroline (Kurtz), her brother Albert and her niece and nephew Kristin and Mark (Stenson).
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at a later date.
