Alice Cohan McCarthy passed away at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth New Hampshire on June 21, 2024 surrounded by her loving family at the age of 92.
Alice was born in Boston in 1931 to William Cohan and Laura Travers Cohan. She was predeceased by her older brother William "Billy" Cohan and younger sister, Barbara "Babs" Cohan Finerty.
Alice grew up in East Boston, attending St. Mary's Star of the Sea Primary School and graduating from East Boston High School. Alice worked as a claims analyst at John Hancock Insurance Company in Boston for many years and later became a social worker for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Long Term Care Unit, retiring in the early 2000s.
Alice married Albert McCarthy(deceased) in1964 and was the mother of twins, Shelley and Kelly who were the center of her universe. Alice lived many years in Everett, Melrose, and Wakefield before recently moving to Brentwood, NH. Alice enjoyed spending time with her family, especially on the family vacations to Cape Cod, North Conway, Bar Harbor, Washington D.C., New York, and Virginia. Her trips to Florida and Arizona with her late sister, Barbara and brother-in-law, Paul, were among her favorite stories to share. Alice was a devoted grandmother. She was affectionately called "Mimi" by her grandchildren. She liked to knit, do crossword puzzles, and eat chocolate. Alice was very patriotic and especially loved the Fourth of July and Christmas. Alice was known for her dry sense of humor, strong opinions, and her wit. She was very interested in American history and politics, and was an avid reader.
Alice is survived by daughters, Shelley (McCarthy) Carpenter and Kelly (McCarthy) Conway; Son-in-Laws, Andrew Carpenter, Richard Conway; Grandchildren: Timothy, Brittany, Meghan, Michael, Samantha, Nick, Daniel, Kylie, and William; and Great Grandchildren: Robert, Zoey, and Miller; Nieces: Laura Kellner, Susan Finerty, Diane Firth and Nephew: Paul Finerty, Jr.; and her little dog, Wee-Willie.
Visitation will be held on Friday, June 28, 2024 from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM in the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster Street, Melrose. A Funeral Service will begin in the funeral home at 12:00 PM. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett. Family & Friend's are respectfully invited to attend.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or The Carroll Center for the Blind.
