Alice Thurber Obituary

Alice Marguerite Wakem, 85, died June 25, 2025, in NY after a long illness. She was born May 17, 1940, in Springfield, MA. The daughter of John Wakem of Waterbury, CT, and Margherita Morren of Brescia, Italy. Predeceased by her brothers Jack Wakem and Paul Wakem, her husband Dale E. Thurber, and her daughter Dawn Thurber. She dedicated her life to God and the service of her community, beginning at the Springfield Rescue Mission. After moving to DeKalb Junction, NY, she served on the Ladies Auxiliary Fire Department and was a community liaison for the St. Lawrence County, NY, Board of Legislators. Survived by her siblings Robert Wakem and Margaret Wilson; her children Betteann Wescott, Theresa Houghton, Dale Thurber, and John Thurber; and grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, July 26, at the Wesleyan Church on 98 White St., Springfield, MA, at 6 p.m.

Betteann & family Alice was always an upbeat lady & had a great sense of humor as well as the ability to get a person to smile. Alice was a devoted servant of God and many times would drive people to church for they no way to get there. When frail elderly needed food items they couldn´t afford, Alice found a way to supply them with food staples.
Alice is a caring friend to me for she volunteered to babysit so I could go to work. Betteann you have many fond memories of your Mom for she was a treasure. Always a friend, Joyce
