"The honest man, tho'e'er sae poor / is king o' men for a' that." – Robert Burns

These timeless words reflect the life and legacy of Alistair Byrne Dawson, whose honesty, humility, humor, and devotion to others made him a true leader in every sense. It is with profound sadness that we share the unexpected passing of Alistair on August 30, 2025.

Alistair was born in England on June 11, 1964. At the age of 5, he moved with his parents to the United States and settled in Houston, Texas. He attended boarding school at Fettes College in Edinburgh, Scotland, then later attended Vanderbilt University, graduating in 1986. He went on to earn his law degree from the University of Texas School of Law.

Alistair's profound impact was evident in the countless lives he touched as a husband, father, mentor, role model, and friend. His presence enriched the lives of all who knew him. He had the exceptional ability to unite people, to lift up those around him, and to lead with both strength and humility. His generosity of spirit and steadfast belief in the potential of others leave behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him. His loss is felt deeply not only within his family but throughout the community.

A pillar of the Houston and Texas legal communities, Alistair was a distinguished trial lawyer whose career exemplified excellence and service. In 1993, he joined Beck Redden LLP, where he was respected for his formidable courtroom skills, sharp intellect, and tireless work ethic. During his career, he served as President of the Houston Bar Association, Chairman of the Texas Bar Foundation, a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, Director of the Texas Lyceum and was a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates.

Alistair's passion for justice and service extended far beyond his distinguished legal career. He was deeply committed to ensuring equal access to legal services, serving as a Board Member for Houston Volunteer Lawyers and Lone Star Legal Aid, and as a Commissioner on the Texas Equal Access to Justice Commission. His dedication to community enrichment was equally profound, reflected in his service on the Board of Theatre Under the Stars, the Parish School Board of Directors, and his advocacy for disability support programs like the H.E.A.R.T. Program and Social Motion Skills. Through his steadfast championing of pro bono work and numerous charitable organizations, Alistair leaves a lasting legacy of compassion, generosity, and community service that will endure for years to come.

When he found free time, he was also an avid golfer and formed many lasting friendships on the golf courses at Lakeside Country Club and Champions Golf Club.

Beyond his public life, Alistair's greatest joy and pride was his family. He was the devoted and adoring husband of Wendy Dawson; a loving father to Kaitlyn (Philip), Cameron (Ainslie), Collin, and Connor Dawson; as well as a proud grandfather to Ella Emanuel, with a grandson joyfully expected in the coming months. He is also survived by his brother Fraser Dawson, his stepmother Karen Dawson, along with extended family members.

Alistair was proud of his British heritage and treasured the bonds he shared across the pond. In Scotland, he was especially loved by his Aunt Jean and Uncle Tony Dolan, and by his cousins Anthony Dolan and Julie Woods (Mick), Kris Hunter (Kenny), and Patricia Meany (Paul). From England, his surviving Aunt Anne Mulloy mourns his passing along with cousins Darren (Pamela) and Jason Mulloy. In Heaven he will be joining his beloved parents, Tom and Josephine Dawson, and his Uncle Terry Mulloy.

To his family and friends, Alistair was a source of laughter, wisdom, and unconditional love. To his colleagues and community, he was a loyal mentor, partner, and friend. His life was a testament to integrity, service, and devotion to others, and his absence leaves an immeasurable void.

A celebration of Alistair's remarkable life will be held in the sanctuary of St. Mark's Episcopal Church (3816 Bellaire Blvd, Houston, TX 77025) on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 1:00 p.m, where all are welcome to gather in remembrance of a man who gave so much of himself to others. A reception will follow immediately after the service at River Oaks Country Club (1600 River Oaks Blvd, Houston, TX 77019) from 3:00-5:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to one of the following charities:

Texas Bar Foundation (TXBF.org); First Tee Greater Houston (firstteegreaterhouston.org); or

Spectrum Linx Foundation-Social Motion Program (www.socialmotionskills.org).
