Alla John Snodgrass, 84, of Slippery Rock, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2025, at Kadima in Harmony.
He was born Aug. 15, 1941, in Butler, a son of the late John "Snuffy" Snodgrass and Mary Stirk Snodgrass.
Alla attended Butler Area schools, where he played football as a Golden Tornado.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Sept. 4, 1958, serving aboard the USS Mississinewa as part of the Mediterranean Cruise. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 13, 1962, after being disabled on the job. Alla enjoyed the company of fellow veterans all his life and was always ready to offer camaraderie and support.
He married the former Elizabeth Ann Pache, originally of Sharon, Pa., on May 10, 1968. She preceded him in death on June 21, 2025.
Alla attended Slippery Rock University. He then worked for Yourga Trucking in
Wheatland, Pa., and later with the U.S. Postal Service from 1980 until his retirement. Whilst at USPS, he served as president of the American Postal Workers Union New Castle Local 227 for many years, fighting to help dozens of employees retain their jobs and benefits.
He loved art and traveled to see major retrospectives of Vincent Van Gogh's work in both Washington, D.C., and Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He enjoyed jazz and blues music - particularly Thelonious Monk and Nina Simone. He was widely read and traveled extensively, most recently to Paris, France. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially at "201." Family was everything.
Growing up, Alla was a member of All Saints Parish, St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, in Butler, and later of St. Faustina Parish, St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, in Slippery Rock.
Alla is survived by two daughters, Tamara Moore, of Pittsburgh, and Sarah (fiancé, Eric Stettmier) Snodgrass, of Slippery Rock, who also was his primary caregiver during the final decade of his life; a sister, Coral (Edward Szewczak) Snodgrass, of Williamsville, N.Y.; a brother, Frank Snodgrass, of Bothell, Wash.; nephews, Michael (Brenda) Riley, of Hamilton, Ohio, Thomas (Rebecca) Altes, of Pittsburgh, Jay (Kristine) Snodgrass, of Tallahassee, Fla., and John Francis Snodgrass, of Spanaway, Wash.; nieces, Donna Riley, of Virginia Beach, Va., Karen (Brett) Barrett of Yukon, Okla., and Jackie (William) Snodgrass, of Apollo; sisters-in-law, Julie (Nicky) DeMatteo, of Cherry Hill, N.J., Rebecca Vogel, of Spokane, Wash., and Shirley Estes, of Oklahoma; several cousins; many great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; close friends; and his canine companions, Hercules and Rigel.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, James Snodgrass, of Butler; sister, Margaret Ann Riley, of Butler; in-laws, Eugene and Margaret Pache, of Mesa, Ariz.; two nephews, Daniel Riley, of Cold Spring, Ky., and William Snodgrass, of New Kensington, Pa.; brother-in-law, Leon Riley, of Butler; sisters-in-law, Janet Snodgrass, of Butler, and Maureen Snodgrass, of Bothell, Wash.; seven aunts; four uncles; and several cousins.
SNODGRASS - Services were private for Alla John Snodgrass, who died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2025, and burial took place in Butler County Memorial Park.
Military honors were accorded at the cemetery by American Legion Post 778, VFW Post 249 and VFW Post 499.
Arrangements were entrusted to the care of MARTIN FUNERAL HOME DOWNTOWN, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler.
