Allen Michael Schulz, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack in his home on Sunday, November 30th.
Allen is survived by his daughters, Rachel Last (Kyle Mitchum) of Sarasota, Florida, and Haley Schulz of Tampa, Florida; and his brother Jeff Schulz (Beth) of DePere, Wisconsin; along with many extended family members and friends who loved him deeply—especially his close friend Barry.
Allen was born and raised in Wisconsin and graduated from Waupun High School in 1978. He later earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin–Stout, where he continued to pursue both academics and athletics.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, Allen especially loved cheering on his beloved Green Bay Packers and following the world of hockey. His passion for the sport extended well beyond the stands; growing up, Allen and his brother Jeff played youth hockey together and were part of two Wisconsin State Championship teams in 1973 and 1975, based in Waupun. Allen also played a season in Fond du Lac, winning another state tournament in 1974, before going on to play collegiate hockey at UW–Stout, where he skated as a right wing and his competitive spirit truly shined.
Allen also loved the outdoors. Some of his most treasured moments were spent fishing, especially on the piers along the Carolina coast. Those trips with his daughters—filled with ocean air, simple joys, and unforgettable father-daughter memories—are among the moments Rachel and Haley will hold closest to their hearts.
He had a sharp mind for conversation and enjoyed lively political debates, always delivered with wit and good nature. Some of Allen’s happiest moments were spent on the golf course or tennis court, sharing those activities with his daughters as they grew up. Those memories remain among their most cherished.
In recent years, Allen found great joy in his work at the Harris Teeter Deli, where he took pride in serving his community and formed many lasting friendships.
Allen will be remembered for his kindness, his easygoing spirit, and the laughter he brought into every room. His loss leaves a profound emptiness in the hearts of all who knew him, but his legacy endures through the stories, smiles, and love he leaves behind.
In keeping with Allen’s wishes, no formal service will be held. Instead, the family asks that donations be made in his memory to the USA Hockey Foundation, supporting youth hockey programs and helping children experience the sport he loved so deeply.
