Alonza Hubert “Al” Ambrose, Jr., 69, of 1378 NC Highway 32 N., passed away Monday, March 31, 2025, in his home where he was being cared for by family.
Mr. Ambrose was born in Suffolk, VA on April 3, 1955, and was the son of the late Alonza Hubert, Sr. and Emma Ward Ambrose. A graduate of Gates County High School, he was a lifelong farmer. A member of Eureka Baptist Church, other memberships and fellowship enjoyed included the Corapeake Hunt Club, Sunbury Ruritan Club, the Gates County Sporting Dog Association, and formerly as a past member in the Shenandoah Valley Tractor Pulling Association. An avid outdoorsman, Al loved tractor pulling, fishing and hunting with his buddies, and the times spent together listening to the dogs run. He deeply loved his family and especially his “grandbabies”.
Surviving is his wife of nearly 51 years, Terri Doughtie Ambrose; two daughters, Corey Jones (Donnie) of Elizabeth City and Ashley Preedy (Earl) of Eure; four grandchildren, Hunter “Buck” Jones (Aaron), Kenlee Jones, Georgia Preedy and Emmaleigh Preedy; and two great-grandchildren, Weston and Reagan Jones, and one due to be born later this year.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. in Eureka Baptist Church and will be conducted by Pastor David Lawson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may visit with the family Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. in Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, and all other times at the residence.
Memorial contributions may be made either to Eureka Baptist Church, in care of Ginny Hurdle, 1139 NC Highway 32 North, Corapeake, NC 27926, or to Albemarle Home Care and Hospice, 1507 N. Road St., Elizabeth City, NC 27909.
