Alphonso Johnson

It is with profound sorrow we announce the death of Alphonso Johnson, 68 of Effingham.
Alphonso "Foots" Johnson, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, peacefully made his earthly transition on May 22, 2024. Born on November 16, 1955, in Florence, SC, to the late Reatha Mae Sellers and Peter Johnson Jr., Alphonso led a life filled with love, music, and dedication to his family and community.
Alphonso attended Florence One Schools and was a proud graduate of South Side High School, Class of 1974. Known for his strong work ethic, he held various jobs throughout his life, often sharing colorful stories about his experiences. He retired from Stone Container, now known as West Rock, in 2003.
A talented musician, Alphonso was passionate about playing the piano and guitar. His musical journey included performances with The Sensational Brown Brothers, The Gospel Troops, The Mellowtones, The Johnson Family, and numerous other gospel groups, bringing joy and inspiration to many through his music.
Alphonso's memory will be cherished by his devoted wife of 50 years, Evangelist Juanita Johnson; his brother, Charles Johnson; and his children: Shandra (Tony) Hammond of Virginia, Alvarez Johnson of Florida, Calandra (Willie) Johnson-Hardin, Debra (Tony) Kearney, Brian Johnson, and Levita Johnson, all of Effingham, SC. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Arieon, Aaron, Donivan, Anthony "Tony," Ajani, Ashanti, Tenia, Jasmine, Zion, Brian, Naseira, Isyss, Amoni, Josiah, Taron (Joann), Bikembe, ShyDesha, and Dontrey; and three great-grandchildren: Dallas, Malia, and Julian.
Additionally, Alphonso leaves behind six sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, and a host of other family members and friends who will forever remember his loving spirit and the beautiful music he shared.
Alphonso Johnson's life was a testament to love, family, and faith, and his legacy will continue to live on through the countless lives he touched.
