In Loving Memory of Alta Lee Tillis October 4, 1936 – September 28, 2025
With deep sorrow and fond remembrance, we announce the passing of Alta Lee Tillis, who departed this life on September 28, 2025, at the age of 88.
Alta lived a life defined by love, dedication, and kindness. She was a devoted wife, a nurturing mother, a caring sister, and a steadfast friend. Her family was always at the heart of everything she did.
Born in Sacramento, California, Alta was the fourth daughter of Alfred and Rosaline Bennetts. She grew up surrounded by her beloved sisters—Donna, Betty, Rita, and Rosemary—and cherished those lifelong bonds.
In May 1958, Alta married William Joseph Widener Sr., and together they raised two children, William Jr. and Cheryl. After William’s passing in 1988, Alta found love again and married Fletcher Tillis in 1997. Fletcher preceded her in death in 2018.
Alta is survived by her sister Rosemary Trotter, her son William Joseph Widener Jr., and her daughter Cheryl Miller. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Rebecca Hutchison, Leah Miller, Bryan Widener, and Matt Widener, and a joyful great-grandmother to six great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, to whom she was a cherished sister and great-aunt.
A graduate of McClatchy High School (Class of 1955), Alta began her career at the telephone company before joining the California Department of Forestry and the Office of the State Fire Marshal, where she served with dedication for 26 years until her retirement in 1998.
Alta found great joy in tending to her beautiful backyard, a peaceful haven that reflected her love of nature and quiet moments.
A Celebration of Life will be held on January 17, 2026, in Elk Grove, California, to honor Alta’s memory and the legacy of love she leaves behind.
