Alton Leon Phelps

Alton Leon Phelps departed this world for his Heavenly home on March 10, 2024.
Alton was born February 21, 1929 in Waurika, Oklahoma to Eugene and Minnie Phelps. The oldest of three children, he enjoyed his childhood on the family farm in Waurika, and often told stories about raising and picking cotton, working with the cattle and fun times with his siblings, Donald and Evelyn. At Waurika High School, he was an award-winning track athlete and President of his local chapter of Future Farmers of America. During a double date with friends who would later become his brother and sister-in-law, he met the love of his life, Peggy. He was smitten with her for the rest of his days.
On August 13, 1949 Alton married his sweetheart, Peggy (Tow) Phelps, and together they raised two sons, Mike and Gary Phelps in Waurika. He started employment with Halliburton in 1951 as a welder, and retired as plant superintendent after 35 years with the company. Alton and Peggy had always enjoyed traveling during their marriage, and after retirement they frequently explored all over the United States in their RV. He was an excellent woodworker and made many beautiful furniture pieces in his work shop, and enjoyed playing golf with his friends every week. Alton was also a certified master gardener, and enjoyed growing his own large vegetable garden and teaching others how to grow as well. Leading by example, he was always the person his family knew they could count on, and treated everyone with dignity. Alton had a kind heart, a quick wit and clever humor, and the world is better for having had him in it for a while.
Alton is survived by his son, Mike and partner Pam; grandchildren: Jennifer Klinkhammer and husband Scott, Elijah Phelps, Bodacia Phelps; and great-grandchild, Gary Black; and sister, Evelyn Knecht. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Phelps; son, Gary Phelps; parents, Eugene and Minnie Phelps; and brother, Donald Phelps.
A funeral service is planned for 2:00 P.M., Thursday, March 14, at Whitt Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Bryan Pain officiating. Serving as pallbearers are Rod Battles, Clifford McGhghy, Joseph Hriscu, Carol Matthesen, Paul Scott, Eli Phelps, and Gary Black. Interment will follow in the Duncan Municipal Cemetery under the direction of Whitt Funeral Home.
