Alton Almon Smith was born in Jack County on August 18, 1937, to Lindsey and Dorothy Smith, and passed away peacefully on February 20, 2026, in Decatur.
Memorial service will be held at a later date.
He graduated from Jacksboro High School in 1955, then attended radio technical school and roughnecked or drove cattle trucks until he was drafted.
Alton served in the United States Army from 1960-1962, we was stationed in Fort Hood, Fort Gordon, and Camp Casey in Korea. He left the Army on August 23, 1962, and married Lillie Lavenie Stephens 9 days later on August 31, after 3 dates. They quickly started their family and had 3 children. Alton made his living in the oil field as a roughneck, truckdriver and welder. He and Lillie were foster parents to over 80 children and maintained contact with a precious few. Alton served as a deacon at McArthur Blvd in Irving, Texas, and First Baptist in Decatur. Alton and Lillie moved to Bridgeport in November 2003 and quickly became involved in First Baptist.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Kay, and his sister, Joyce.
He is survived by his wife, Lillie; his daughter, Suzy; his son, Jeff; 5 grandchildren, Randy, Ashley, Caitlyn, Kelsey, and Dylan; his 7 great grandchildren, Kaden, Emily, Kyra, Trenton, Morgan, Lahna, and Logan; His 2 brothers, and 2 sisters, Lindon Smith, Garry Smith, Lucy Frazier, and Sherry Casey. Numerous extended family members and a host of wonderful friends.
