Alvin D. Engel

Alvin D. Engel, a cherished educator, devoted family man, and a man of many hobbies, passed away peacefully at his home in Sharon, MA on October 13, 2025, at the age of 99.
Alvin was born in Olyphant, PA and spent his teen and young adult years at Yeshiva and then working in Boro Park, Brooklyn, where he met the love of his life, Cynthia (Friedlander). They were married for nearly 74 years before her death last October. After serving in the US Navy during the Korean War, Alvin utilized the GI Bill to attend college, earning his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Brooklyn College. He later earned his Doctorate in Education from NYU. His thirst for knowledge and passion for teaching led him to a fulfilling career as an educator in the Jericho Public Schools on Long Island, where he influenced countless lives over his 30-year tenure.
Alvin was the proud father of Michael Engel of Tel Aviv, grandfather to Amos (Hadas) and Romy (Dan), and great grandfather to Nevo and Daya. He was lovingly cared for in his later years by his daughter Sheryl Olshin, her husband Josh and their daughter Emma, with whom he shared a special bond.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Alvin was known for his extraordinary talents and hobbies. His hands were rarely still, as he was a skilled calligrapher, a self-taught bread maker, and a gifted furniture maker. His woodworking was a testament to his attention to detail and his love of craftsmanship.
Alvin loved classical music and enjoyed restoring and playing grand pianos, having owned several in his lifetime. A lover of language and literature, Alvin took great pleasure in reading the works of I.B. Singer in their original Yiddish, and he often lost himself in the intricate plots of mystery novels.
Alvin's memory will be treasured by all who knew him. His life was a journey of purpose, and the legacy of his love and learning will endure for generations to come.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Graveside Service at Rock Ridge Cemetery in Sharon on Friday October 17th at 12 noon. Shiva will follow at the home of Sheryl and Josh, from 1-5pm on Friday, and again on Saturday evening from 7-9pm. Alvin's family would like to thank Caring Hospice for their compassionate and unwavering support during his last few weeks.
