HITCHCOCK – Mr. Alvin James Mendonca passed from this life Wednesday morning, July 20, 2022, in Texas City.
Alvin James "Jim" Mendonca was born August, 9th 1933 in Red Bluff, California to Maria Lourdes Alvares and Jose Xavier Mendonca of Flores, Azores. The couple had 5 children and were hard working dairy farmers. Jim loved people to know that he was a farm boy. At 13 he went to seminary for about 4 years and was then drafted by the United States Air Force. His deployment sent him to Japan where he lived for 2 years repairing ground radio equipment. Upon completion of his service, he attended Chico University where he earned a degree as an electronic engineer. He started his engineering career with the United States Naval Weapons Center in China Lake and then on to The Mojave Desert where he worked on the electronics of planes and missiles for the United States Government. About this time is when he married his first wife, Judy, they had 5 daughters. In 1980, they divorced and Jim moved to Texas for a contracting job with the United States Military. This is about the time he met Anne and her 8 children. He and Anne married in 1982 and her children became a big part of his life. For 40 years Jim was part of this large family's ups & downs, birthdays, graduations, celebrations, weddings and funerals. In 1991 Jim retired and he and Anne began to travel all over the United States in their RV. They also loved cruising and voyaged to Europe, Australia and his parent's homeland, The Azores. Jim & Anne lived in several places in Texas and created an abundance of wonderful family memories. Jim was brilliant, kind, tough, selfless, and a true gentleman. He will be deeply missed.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Anne Delina; sister, Margaret Jane; brother, Angelo Xavier and daughter, Susan.
He is survived by his sister, Evelyn Marie Henderson of Oklahoma; brother, Anthony Louis of California; daughters, Denise Mendonca, Karen Silva, Zan Mendonca, Melissa Mendonca, all of California; step-children, Richard Scherrer of Montana, Paul Scherrer and wife, Amy of Florida, William Scherrer and wife, Carolyn, Jeffrey Scherrer and wife, Marianna, Robert Scherrer and wife, Bari, Alison Harris and husband, Doug, Lisa Inmon and husband, Owen, Katie Cummings and husband, Chad, all of Texas; his 19 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 1, 2022, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Reverend David Harris officiant.
Jim will be entombed in the Houston National Cemetery at a later date. May he rest in peace.
