Amy Burns Obituary
Amy Tennille Burns, born on June 1, 1976, in Danville, Virginia, left this world too early, as she passed away on November 20, 2025, in Portsmouth, Virginia, at the age of 49.
Amy was a dedicated educator with a passion for shaping young minds. She devoted 13 years to teaching, spending much of her career at Douglas Park Elementary in Portsmouth, where she was honored as Teacher of the Year. Her commitment to education and her students left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
A proud alumna of Virginia Wesleyan College in Virginia Beach, VA, Amy attended on a full softball scholarship, showcasing her talents both on the field and in the classroom. She furthered her education by earning a Master's degree from Phoenix University. Amy was also a cherished member of Alpha Sigma Alpha and a dedicated dance mom, supporting her daughter in all her endeavors. A woman of deep faith, Amy attended Grove Baptist Church in Portsmouth, VA.
Amy's greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her loving husband, Christopher Darryl Burns, and their beloved daughter, Jaylin Burns of Portsmouth. She also leaves behind her father, Richard Lawrence Richardson, Jr.; her brothers, Richard Lawrence Richardson, III of Danville, VA, and William Richardson of Virginia Beach, VA; and her nieces and nephews, April Lynn Richardson, Taylor Nicole Richardson, Azelyn Nichole Richardson, Kaylee Paige Richardson, and Ian Wayne Hite. Amy was preceded in death by her mother, Patricia Carol Johnson Richardson-Hite whom she cared for.
A celebration of Amy's life will be held at Grove Baptist Church, Portsmouth, VA on Wednesday, December 3rd at 11:00 am. The Cremation Society of Virginia, Chesapeake Office, is assisting the family during this difficult time.
