Andrea Ames Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home and Cremation Service - Bucksport on Dec. 12, 2025.
Andrea "Andy" Ames
May 3, 1955 – Dec. 7, 2025
Ellsworth, Maine – Andrea "Andy" Teru Hewett Ames passed away peacefully, at home, in Ellsworth, Maine on December 7, 2025. Andy was born May 3, 1955, in Waterville, Maine, the daughter of Jerome K. Hewett and Audrey E. (Andrews) Hewett. Andy grew up in Sidney, Maine, on the small family farm.
Andy attended elementary schools in Sidney and Belgrade and graduated from Messalonski High School in 1973. Andy graduated from the University of Maine at Farmington in 1977 and earned her Maine teaching credential.
Andy taught in Maine schools for several years. Andy married Tim Ames, formerly of Bucksport, on April 19, 1986, in Oxnard, California, and after that, moved with her husband to San Diego, California, where she earned her California teaching credential, and taught kindergarten in local schools for 30+ years. She was a dedicated teacher and worked extensively "off-the-clock" to prepare materials for her students.
Andy enjoyed hiking, snow shoeing, dancing, boating and hanging out during the summer at "camp" in Maine, photography, crocheting, visiting the San Diego Zoo, and visiting Sequoia and Death Valley National Parks.
Andy and her husband moved back to Maine in 2020, at the height of the covid pandemic.
Andy was a lifelong learner, taking classes in photography, Photoshop, American Sign Language, and swimming at the local Grossmont College, in addition to classes at San Diego State University to get her California teaching credential. She also took Jitterbug and Lindy Hop dance classes for several years and was an accomplished dancer. She studied karate and earned the rank of 1st degree black belt.
Andy was a thoughtful and caring friend. Though small in stature, she had a huge personality and wasn't afraid to spread some smiles and silliness.
Andy was predeceased by her parents, and survived by her husband of almost 40 years, her brother Mark K. Hewett of West Virginia, and brother Eric J. Hewett and wife Patricia of Sidney, Maine, plus nieces, nephews and cousins. She is also survived by her best friends Cheryl Beach (from childhood) and Wendy Smith, plus many friends in the San Diego area, and in Maine.
Graveside services will be held in the spring of 2026, at a date to be determined, for family and friends, in Bucksport, Maine.
We wish to acknowledge the caring treatment at the Mary Dow Center in Ellsworth, and the support of Patricia and the kind volunteers of The Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County. If desired, donations may be made in Andy's name to The Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County, 14 McKenzie Ave., Ellsworth, ME 04605. Arrangements are under the care of Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home and Cremation Services Bucksport (mitchelltweedie-young.com)

Andy was small but mighty with hair almost longer than she was tall. I loved seeing her smile at Chase where I worked with her, listening as she wrangled her kinders with ease. She will be missed. Love to her friends and family.

Andy was such a bright light. I had the pleasure of working with her at Chase Elementary School. She will be deeply missed. My heartfelt condolences to her husband and family.

Andy was small, yes, but strong in so many ways. She loved taking us to the cemeteries looking for my cousin, Tim's relatives ( tics & all). Andy was so well rounded, creative, and made a perfect elementary teacher. John and I will truly miss the joint Christmas letters she and Tim sent each year, showing humor and fun times. Tim, we are so very sorry this happened to such a kind, loving person, and our hearts are broken over her passing. Love you
