Andrew Granoff Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by All County Funeral Home-Del Lago Chapel - Lake Worth on Dec. 30, 2022.
Andrew (Andy) Scott Granoff (70) of Boca Raton, Florida passed away peacefully on December 23, 2022, surrounded by family.
Andy is predeceased by his parents Harry and Theodora (Toby) Granoff and survived by his loving wife of 12 years, Yvonne Granoff; children, Brandi, Jennifer, Nicole, Nathan, and Samantha; and 16 grandchildren.
Andy's story was nothing short of extraordinary. Born in Brooklyn, New York on May 9, 1952, Andy's early years were spent growing up in Chicago, Illinois and White Plains, New York until his family settled in the Moorings in East Islip on Long Island.
From his youth into adulthood, Andy was always active. He was a strong swimmer, had joined several bowling leagues, loved getting out in the bay on a boat, and enjoyed playing tennis.
When Andy wasn't playing sports, he was watching them. Baseball was his first passion. While he was one of the most loyal Yankees fans the franchise has ever seen, the sport of baseball became such a part of him that he became a veritable walking encyclopedia of baseball knowledge dating back to the 1960s. Andy's second favorite passion was football. The New York Giants were his first love but later he found a home in the fandom of the Tennessee Volunteers, a team he faithfully and enthusiastically followed and watched whenever they played.
Professionally, Andy used his degree from Hofstra University to develop a lucrative and prolific career in the financial sector. He started selling insurance but evolved into more complex consulting work, negotiating deals and using his social prowess to develop strong business connections and lifelong friends.
Andy's life took a dramatic turn at the age of 37 when, while vacationing in Tennessee with his family, he became ill and fell prey to a rare condition that rendered him paralyzed from the neck down. Without warning or preparation, his New York life was upheaved, and White Pine now became home as everyday tasks became monumental ones.
What happened to Andy would break the average person, but not Andy. Andy was known for his stubbornness, but that same trait that could drive his family and friends to the edge of sanity became his biggest asset when he needed it. While others might have settled into a permanent depression at their disability, Andy's stubbornness yielded huge dividends as he fought to find every possible cure for his condition and in the absence of that, found ways to thrive and cultivate the joy in his life, all while providing inspiration to those around him who bore witness to it. The same strength and drive that catapulted him to business success had now turned to an unrelenting desire to not let his disability impede him from doing the things he loved.
After conquering what used to be easy, mundane tasks like showering himself and shaving, he tackled the larger ones, managing to work successful business deals in real estate and even doing a short stint as a sports agent. To regain his independence, he found ways to adapt every car he owned to operate on hand controls so he could go where he pleased and play oldies stations ad nauseam. And in the rest of his spare time, Andy enjoyed visiting and hosting friends and family, collecting sports and TV/movie memorabilia, and continuing to cultivate his love of water through boating.
On May 20, 2010, Andy met the love of his life and best friend Yvonne. A year to the day later, the two were married and have spent 12 years together, making each other laugh, supporting each other through tragedy, encouraging each other in their personal and professional lives, and enjoying life. Together they made a home, first in Tennessee then later, in retirement, in Boca Raton. In what used to be his mother's condominium, the two settled in and made her home theirs. Together, they would frequently go to the pool where Andy would "hold court" with friends and meet new people while he soaked up the sun. They also would take trips to the beach to enjoy the ocean breezes, take in the Jewish ethnic delights of Ben's Kosher Deli, enjoy Yvonne's culinary skills in German food, and delight in each other's company through laughter and conversation.
Andy will be sorely missed by friends and family alike, but even in death he will continue to go on, for he leaves behind a legacy of immortality in his children. Through them, Andy's quick wit, charm, humor, strength, love of sports, business prowess, and chocolate chip ice cream will go on.
A Memorial will be held at Boca Pointe, Boca Raton, Florida on Friday, January 27, 2023, from 3:00-6:00 pm. Visitors are welcome to come pay their respects but, due to the complex's visitor policy, are asked to contact Yvonne at 865-712-8041 with their name prior to arrival so they can be permitted entry and get specific directions to the Memorial.
