Andrew Davis Holmes, age 79, a loving husband, caring father, adoring grandfather, affectionate cousin, devoted friend and family member, passed away on Monday, August 12, 2024, peacefully at home. Born in Waterbury, CT on February 3, 1945, Jamestown was always a special place for Andy, from his early childhood days visiting his grandparents during the summer, to living in Jamestown attending 5th and 6th grades. Eventually, becoming a permanent resident of Jamestown in 1974 until 2008, building a home in 1987 and creating Holmested Ct. As a member of St. Matthew's Church, he served on the Vestry as Treasurer for several years. Andy's family moved to Falls Church, VA where he attended George Mason Junior-Senior High School 7th 8th and 9th grades. Andy's father Captain Wilbur T. Holmes US Navy had European duty bringing his family to live in, Naples, Italy, London, England, Paris, France and Athens Greece. At age three living in Naples Andy's first Italian word was Elefante. He attended the American Community Schools of Paris, France in grades 10 and 11 and his senior year at the American Academy of Athens, Greece. The most memorable of his school age years, boating on the Aegean Sea and meeting his best friend Demo. Andy returned to the States to attend Northeastern University to study Business Administration with a major in accounting. Before graduating he moved to Brussels, Belgium where his parents were living and started a career in accounting traveling between London and Belgium. Andy spoke fluent French, skied the Alps and swam in the Mediterranean. He was grateful, humble, quiet, thoughtful and always a gentleman. Andy's mother Lois Husted Holmes' grandparents summered in Jamestown in a Victorian home on East Shore Road, and later her parents in a Victorian home on Fairview St. Andy had wonderful memories of his time spent at these homes, with his cousins and making lifelong Jamestown friends. Andy's passion was sailing, especially on Narragansett Bay for the past 16 years on JMACK II his 30 ft Sabre. His love for sailing began as a child in Jamestown on his Uncle Dr. Whitney Brown's sailboat Enki. Andy enjoyed attending the theatre whether it was Broadway, Boston, Providence, Matunuck's Theatre by the Sea or Jamestown's Community Theatre. Andy had an adventurous spirit, scuba diving at Fort Wetherill, honeymooning in Cairo, Egypt and cruising the Nile River, choosing a doors off helicopter tour over Kauai, being a crew member on his brother Tom's boat Avalanche sailing the boat from Jamestown to Saint Martin, assisting his brother Peter last spring to sail his new boat from New Jersey to Wickford. At age 78 on a family trip to the Magic Kingdom Andy joined his sons on a new motorcycle/rollercoaster ride called Tron. Andy was an accountant at the George C. Moore Company in Westerly, RI before retiring in 2011. Andy is survived by his wife, Margie (Margaret Tammelleo), and sons, Christopher and Jonathan of North Kingstown, his daughter, Kimberly DeMello and her husband, Kevin of Newport, RI and their four daughters, his grandchildren, Brooklyn, Ryan, Colby and Marly who made him so happy; his brother, John Thomas Holmes and his wife, Mary of Cleveland, Ohio and their daughters, Sarah and Molly (of Honolulu) and their families; and his brother, Peter S. Holmes and his wife, Karen and their daughter, Jessica of New Jersey. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 in the Fagan-Quinn Funeral Home, 825 Boston Neck Rd., North Kingstown from 4:00 - 6:00 pm followed by a memorial service from 6:00 - 6:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to Sail Newport. We plan to set up a scholarship fund in his memory.
