Obituary published on Legacy.com by F. S. Roberts & Son Funeral Home on Aug. 2, 2025.
Athan Evangelos Galanis, a man of spirited passion and boundless curiosity, completed his earthly journey on July 31, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on May 6, 1936, in the picturesque town of Paralia, Kymi, Greece, Athan's zest for life and love for the sea were evident from an early age. He departed this world in Newburyport, MA, leaving behind a legacy of love, knowledge, and dedication.
Athan's academic pursuits led him to Northeastern University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. His education provided a strong foundation for his illustrious career in shipping. Starting as a Second Mate in the Merchant Marine, Athan's competence and leadership soon saw him rise to the esteemed position of Chief Officer of the Motor Vessel Olympia, a cruise liner which is also where he ultimately met his wife. His seafaring days instilled in him a sense of adventure and a global perspective that he carried throughout his life after years of navigating the oceans, Athan traded the rolling waves for the stability of the shore, becoming a shipping agent. In 1975, with a vision and work ethic that were second to none, he established his own Ship Agency company named after his hometown village called Paralia Corporation. His entrepreneurial spirit and determined drive was matched only by his commitment to his family and the community.
Athan was a devout Greek Orthodox Christian, finding solace and strength in his faith. He practiced his beliefs with fervor and humility. His faith was his compass, guiding him through life's storms and celebrations.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy, with whom he shared a deep and enduring love. Married for over 57 years, as most people knew, they had a fairy tale meeting which led to a long and committed marriage. Together, they raised a family that mirrored Athan's values of hard work, respect, and compassion. He also left behind his beloved family, Evan Galanis, and his wife Rashah, Melaina (Galanis) Eggleston, and her husband John, and Dianna (Galanis) Scanlon, and her husband David, his Brother-in-Law Richard Palmaccio, only surviving sister Ditsa Rigas and family in Greece; along with his six grandchildren; Sierra, Athan, Alexandra, Olivia, Marina and Seve. They will all carry forward his legacy, each embodying elements of Athan's character and teachings.
An engaging conversationalist, Athan relished discussions on a myriad of topics usually with an Ouzo, exploring them with meticulous interest to learn and debate. He loved reading, with a penchant for biographies and history, especially those pertaining to Greek Mythology. Athan's intellectual pursuits culminated in the authoring of his book, "Odyssey of the Seven Seas," a chronicle of his life's adventures and wisdom.
Athan's interests extended beyond the intellectual realm. His hands were rarely still, as he found joy in making improvements around the house both inside and outside. His dexterity and skill in these areas were a testament to his belief in the value of hard work and the satisfaction derived from a task well done.
To describe Athan as merely 'interesting' would be an understatement. His life was a tapestry of experiences, woven with threads of adventure, family, faith, and community. He approached each day with a sense of purpose and an infectious enthusiasm that inspired those around him. He had an ability to reach people on many different levels who were drawn by his zest for life and determined nature, blending historical and traditional values with the present. He was always confident he could lead a horse to water and make it drink at the same time.
As we bid farewell to Athan E. Galanis, we celebrate a life richly lived and a man deeply loved. His memory will be cherished in the hearts of all who knew him, and his stories will continue to be told with admiration and affection. Athan's journey on earth has ended, but his spirit soars unfettered, as he embarks on the ultimate voyage to his heavenly home.
