Alvinza Clayton Hanson III, 83, of Amesbury, passed away peacefully at home on July 29, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Clayton was born in the south end of Newburyport, MA, on August 16, 1941, the son of the late Mamie Ann Perkins (Hanson) Cashman and Alvinza C. Hanson Jr. He was raised by his mother and stepfather, George J. Cashman.

Clayton graduated from Newburyport High School in 1961 and continued his education at the Leland Powers School of Broadcasting. He then worked for many years at various radio and television stations throughout New England, including WMUR Channel 9 as a cameraman and engineer. He later started his own business, Joppa Painting, where he became one of the most sought-after interior house painters in the area.

Clayton will be dearly missed by his wife of 56 years, Janis Lea (Griffin) Hanson, and their two children: Chris Hanson of Amesbury, MA, and Alyssa (Hanson) Willette and husband Justin Willette of Boxford, MA.

He will be cherished by his four grandchildren: Lydia, Ethan, Phoebe, and JJ, who will forever hold onto his kind smile and wise sense of humor.

Clayton is survived by his sister, Karen Cashman of Fitchburg, MA, and was predeceased by his sisters Geneva Hanson, Patricia Hanson Isabelle Brugh, June Hanson Bennett, Kathleen Cashman Abner, and his brother George Cashman Jr. He was affectionately known as "Uncle Butch" by his many nieces and nephews.

Clayton's favorite times were spent at Star Island, driving up the coast of Maine with Janis, and watching his grandchildren's baseball and hockey games.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations be pledged to the place Clayton loved: Star Island.

Donation pledges may be made online at https://starisland.org/donate

At Clayton's request, services are private.
