Andrew W. Lax
June 6, 1955 – September 1, 2024
Andrew "Andy" Wayne Lax, 69, died surrounded by his family at his home in Cornelius, North Carolina on September 1, 2024, following a brief battle with lung cancer. Andy was born at Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia on June 6, 1955, the eldest son of Edgar and Gladys (Ewing) Lax. He graduated from Orange High School (VA) in 1973, which is where he started playing tennis, a passion that continued throughout his life.
Andy graduated from The College of William & Mary in 1977 where he majored in History. He moved to Washington, DC in 1981 and worked at the original Circuit City. In 1985, he graduated from Wake Forest University School of Law and joined the law firm Golding Meekins Holden Cosper & Stiles in Charlotte, NC. Over the course of his nearly 40-year legal career, Andy was a partner in that firm, as well as Crews & Klein, McNair Law Firm, Forrest Firm, and was of-counsel with Michael Best. As a trial lawyer, he was recognized in The Best Lawyers in America and as a North Carolina Super Lawyer. He was a certified mediator and arbitrator and was looking forward to a practice focused on dispute resolution with Miles Mediation & Arbitration after retiring from his litigation practice in May.
Andy married Judith "Jude" Anne Starrett in Charlotte, NC on September 24, 1988. They moved to Cornelius in 1993 and raised two daughters, Jordan and Austen. Andy was an amazing father who adored and championed his daughters. Alongside his professional career, Andy explored his artistic talents as a musician, visual artist, and self-published author of the novel Worthwhile (1999). He loved music, beer, tennis, and pickleball, but his greatest joy came from his family and the many friendships he cherished and nurtured throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Michael "Mickey" Lax. He is survived by his wife, Jude Starrett of Cornelius, NC, daughters – Jordan Meyers Lax of Charlotte, NC, and Austen Michelle Lax (Sam Issermoyer) of Denver, CO – and sister, Susan O'Brien of Roanoke, VA.
A Celebration of Life will be held at October 4, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Davidson UMC with a reception to follow.
Online condolences may be left at www.jamesfuneralhomelkn.com or on Andy's CaringBridge page. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lung Cancer Research Foundation, American Cancer Society, or to the charity of your choice.
The family extends their gratitude to the doctors and staff on the Oncology Team at Charlotte's Atrium Health Hospital in Charlotte and Atrium Health's palliative care team at the David L. Conlan Rehabilitation Center for their excellent care.
