Andrew McMurtrie Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Pearson Funeral Home on Mar. 3, 2026.
Andrew "Drew" McMurtrie, 75, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away on February 28, 2026, at UofL Jewish Hospital. Born and raised in Louisville and of proud Scottish heritage, Drew carried both his roots and his heritage with him throughout his life.

Drew was a graduate of Centre College and the University of Tennessee. He dedicated more than two decades to Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation (B&W), where he served in several technical and management roles within the Research & Development and Product Development divisions. Recognized for his technical expertise and thoughtful leadership, he was widely respected for his work in aerodynamic modeling and smoke physics, serving as Senior Scientist in the field. He later rose to Director of Product Development. He also spent a brief period abroad with the company's parent organization, British American Tobacco (BAT), serving as Global Product Director. Throughout his career, he traveled extensively both domestically and internationally. Louisville, however, was his love and his home.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Drew was an avid photographer and had a deep love of music. He found fulfillment in philanthropy and community service, generously giving his time to Bunbury Theatre, No One Dies Alone (NODA), Frazier Rehabilitation, Louisville Public Media, Waterfront Park, and Gilda's Club Kentuckiana.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Winifred and Gilbert McMurtrie, and his sister, Linda Foster (Bob). Drew is survived by his former wife, Connie Mitchell, and their daughters, Colleen Spencer (Stuart) of Richmond, Kentucky, and Erin Stagner (Matthew) of Louisville, Kentucky. He was a proud grandfather to Chloe Spencer, Hadley Spencer (fiancé Chance White), and Harper Stagner. He is also survived by his nephew, Drew Turner (Shannon), and his longtime friend, Roger Black.

A private family service will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gilda's Club Kentuckiana.

Drew was a colleague and friend of mine at B&W for almost 30 years. He was kind, personable, widely liked and widely respected. His passing at just 75 is a shock to us all. Rest In Peace buddy.

I am so so sorry to hear the news about Drew. I had the previlage to work with him at B&W. He was a great person, kind, caring, level-headed. I always looked up to him and his inclusive and caring management style. He certianly had an impact on me as a new young hire in the corporate world. Will miss his kind words and our conversations. May he rest in peace ! My prayers are with him and his family.

I was so shocked and sad to hear this news. So grateful to have seen Drew recently. He was one of the best and will be deeply missed. What an impact he made for so many and in so many ways. I know some of the best of who he was lives on in his daughters and granddaughters whom he loved so dearly. He shared many photos and stories of them when we last met for coffee. His legacy lives on. Rest in peace my friend.
