Andrew C. Robins, 69, of Kalamazoo died on Wednesday, December 3, 2025.
A familiar voice on the radio – and a husband, father and grandfather, whose interests ranged from astronomy to typewriters – Robins was known to family and friends as Andy.
He was born on February 15, 1956 in Omaha, NE, to Burl Harvey Robins, Jr. and Bonnie Lee (Ackers) Robins. Andy’s interest in broadcasting was evident from a young age as he took up the role of delivering school announcements. A Portage Northern High School graduate, he furthered his education at Kalamazoo College, ultimately earning a bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University.
Andy’s professional journey began in 1974 at WKPR-AM in Kalamazoo, but he was best known for his role at Kalamazoo public radio station WMUK-FM. Andy dedicated more than 35 years to the station, serving as its news director for more than 20 years. His reporters knew him for his resolve. Andy reported without fear or favor, and made sure that everyone in the newsroom could as well. Amid declining local news coverage, Andy helped to shape the next generation of journalists by establishing WMUK’s student internship.
Andy was known for his sense of humor, which was on the dry side. He enjoyed both solitude and conversation. Andy belonged to groups including the Kalamazoo Astronomical Society and typewriter club the Typochondriacs, and served on the board of directors for AACORN Community. An avid reader, he especially enjoyed books on aviation and history, and science fiction. He traveled to destinations including Italy, Alaska, Australia/New Zealand, and Ireland, which held a special place in his heart. Closer to home, he enjoyed Beaver Island. He was a very active ham radio operator. His call sign was KB8QGF. Recently, he collected and used fountain pens.
Andy cherished his family and took pride in his marriage to Dorothy. They exchanged vows on June 25, 1983, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Kalamazoo, with a reception in Dorothy’s hometown, Lawrence. Andy found infinite joy in sharing life with his granddaughter, Finley. He was a noted pancake chef in his house.
Andy was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Russell Robins. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Gratzle-Robins; daughter Jaime (Joshua) Raifsnider of Vicksburg and son Noah Michael Robins, of Kalamazoo; and granddaughter Finley Raifsnider.
According to Noah, Andy was the world’s greatest dad.
There will be a memorial service in Kalamazoo at a later date.
