Angela passed away surrounded by her loved ones on Thursday, January 4, 2024 at St. Benedict Health Center in Dickinson, after a series of health problems.

Angela Schatz was born on July 14, 1945 in Burt, North Dakota. She was the oldest daughter of Alphons and Regina (Meier) Schmitt. She grew up in Burt, where her parents owned a hardware store. Angela graduated from Mott High School in 1963.

Angela met the love of her life, Leo Schatz, at the roller skating rink in Burt. Grandpa Schmitt always kept a close eye on Angela, and until the day she married Leo, he made sure she was home when the porch light came on. Leo and Angela were united in marriage on April 4, 1964, with a beautiful wedding ceremony at St. Vincent’s Catholic Church in Mott. Eleven months later, they had their first child. The pair were blessed with five children, Sheila, Wayne, Shea, Scott, and Lynelle. The kids kept Angela and Leo very busy.

Leo’s job took the family to various small towns in southwestern North Dakota, and Angela made friends wherever they went. In 1978, the family moved to Dickinson. Angela was a cook at many of the local restaurants, including Lisko’s Café, the Paragon, and the Ivanhoe. She could easily whip up a perfect omelet, as well as a burger with fries. She also worked at Evergreen for twelve years before retiring.

Angela loved to entertain and decorate for the holidays. Around Christmastime, you would find her baking many cookies and lots of fudge. Her freezer was always full of goodies. Simple gatherings usually ended with a full course meal. Angela always had a garden, and she spent many days canning and preserving vegetables, some of which she would sell. Her produce was shared with many friends and neighbors, and no one ever went hungry when she was around.

Angela enjoyed playing bingo and cards, and she loved to visit. Her beloved cat, Sammy, and Leo’s Pomeranian, Buddy, were a great source of joy to her.

Angela was an extremely caring grandmother, and her house was always filled with grandkids. She often cooked special breakfasts for them, including oatmeal with ice cream. She attended many of their sports events, and was very proud of every accomplishment.

Angela is survived by her children, Sheila (Denny) Francis of Norwich, Wayne (Robin) Schatz, Shea (Michelle) Schatz, Scott (Glenda) Schatz, and Lynelle (Bruce) Hecker, all of Dickinson; grandchildren, Dustin, Desiree, Cody, Hunter, Remington, Ashton, Caden, Whitney, Jason, Danielle, and Andrea; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Margaret, Isabel, Lucy, and their spouses and children; sisters-in-law, Shirley and Jane; and her cat, Sammy.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo (2020); her parents and grandparents; sister, Janice; brother, Alvin; grandson, Dylan; and numerous other relatives.

The acts of kindness extended during this time are greatly appreciated.
