Anita McDonald Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home on Feb. 2, 2026.
With heavy hearts, we announce the unexpected passing of Anita Ann Fletcher of Palestine, TX, on January 22, 2026, at the age of 65 years.

Anita was affectionately known to friends and family simply as "Annie".

Born in 1960 to Mermon Fletcher and Gisela Elsenberger, Annie and her siblings grew up between two cultures and continents, splitting their formative years between their father's native East Texas and their mother's native Germany. The family settled permanently in Palestine, TX, in the mid-1970s, where Annie graduated from Westwood High School.

Following graduation, Annie answered the call to serve by enlisting in the United States Army, where she served seven years in the Army Medical Corps and attained the rank of Sergeant. Annie's military service soon brought her back to Germany, where she eventually started her family before finally returning to the United States.

Upon her honorable discharge from the Army, Annie attended nursing school and pursued a nursing career, first in Dallas and later in East Texas.

Annie's fearless attitude and strong work ethic meant that she was ready and willing to undertake unpopular assignments. In the mid-1980's, she dutifully worked on the front lines of the early AIDS crisis in Dallas, when panic was at an all-time high and staffing was short. Later on, after moving back to East Texas, Annie found herself specializing in Alzheimer's wards, unpopular units among her peers due to the physical and emotional challenges typical of late-stage memory care.

Annie had an infectious laugh, was a voracious reader, and held a lifelong affection for animals. She was also a firm believer in God and her formidable knowledge of the Bible would give any preacher a run for his money.

She is survived by her son James McDonald (Montreal, Canada), her father Mermon Fletcher (Palestine, TX), her sister Sandra Odom (Palestine, TX), her brother Roland Fletcher (Palestine, TX), and her nephews Jake Odom (Palestine, TX), Gregory Parker (Whitehouse, TX), Joshua Fletcher (Atlanta, GA), and Michael Fletcher (New London, CT), as well as their respective spouses and children.

Annie now joins her predeceased loved ones, including her mother Gisela Fletcher (née Elsenberger), her beloved sister Tammy Parker (née Fletcher), her cherished nephew Gerald Parker, as well as her dearly departed grandparents Roland Fletcher and Essie Mae Coslett (formerly of Maydelle, TX), and Hermann Elsenberger and Maria Otterbein (formerly of Wiesbaden, Germany).

Annie will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all who loved her.
