I knew Anita very late in my life by pure conicidence: After retirement I started to search the history of my large family originated from the small town of Allenstein, Germany. Unexpectedly at Google Books I discovered the novel: "Danger on my doorstep -The Anita Powitzer Story", by Linda Shubert. The book starts with a story about my Grandfather Isidor Abraham. Right after WW1 he hosted a young salesman - Martin Powitzer. Martin fell in love to Trude, Isidors youngest daughter. Martin married Trude and they moved to Berlin. The couple had a daughter Anita, born 25 August 1926 in Berlin.
I searched for the author of the novel at LinkedIn. It turned out that Linda is the daughter of my cousin Anita! What a miracle. Within a couple of hours Anita invited me. We flew to Washington and met Anita for the first time: A very energetic and smart lady, full of love for her large family.
Very early in her life at the age of 12 Anita experienced the Kristallnacht. Her school, the famous Theodore Herzl School in Berlin was burned by the Nazis and the shop of her father Martin was looted.
Anita´s parents decided to send her by the Kindertransport to England without being sure to meet her ever again. Anita´s parents were lucky to get a visa to England a couple of weeks before the outbreak of WW2. The family had to wait for two more years for the US visa. This way they experienced the Blitz - another trauma. I am sure that these events Anita experienced at a very young age made her so resilient.
Anita helped me to understand the history of my family´s life. Her impressive memory revealed many details I didn´t know.
I am telling Anitas story in my talks to German Highschool students at the Holocaust Remembrance Day. Hopefully it makes them aware of what may happen to a country, when populists and fascists take control.
