Ann McIntosh Brotherton, 91, passed away on Monday, November 17, 2025. She was born in Gaston County, daughter of the late Fred and Maude Huitt McIntosh. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Gray Brotherton; her son Barry Brotherton; and her siblings, Sydney McIntosh, Baron McIntosh, Baxter McIntosh, Sarah Nixon, Cora Grice, Mike McIntosh, and Lucille Shuford.
Mrs. Brotherton is survived by her children, Carol Larrimore (Peter), Peggy Devine (Dan), Allen Brotherton (Lynn), daughter-in-law, Deborah Brotherton; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; her brother, Thomas McIntosh (Lela); sister-in-law Margaret McIntosh; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Ann was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was born and raised in Mt Holly, and she and Curtis spent most of their married life in the Lowesville community, living close to brothers and sisters. They were lifelong members of Hills Chapel UMC, where Ann served in various roles. She worked at different times in secretarial positions and had a small business filling out income taxes for neighbors. She loved playing bridge with her siblings, and enjoyed solving many varieties of word puzzles to keep her mind sharp. As her eyesight failed, she moved to Abernethy Laurels Continuing Care Facility. It was there she made many friends and was dearly loved by the staff. She filled her days listening to books on tape, especially the Bible, which fueled her faith for the period of declining health. Visits from her family always brightened her days, and you always left her room feeling better than you came. She will truly be missed by all.
A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Brotherton will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at Hills Chapel United Methodist Church (988 NC-16, Stanley, NC 28164). The family will greet friends from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the church. Burial will be private.
Memorials may be made to the Abernethy Laurels Benevolence Fund, 102 Leonard Ave., Newton, NC 28658. Condolence messages may be sent to the family by visiting www.woodlawnfuneral.org. Woodlawn funeral Home of Mount Holly is caring for Mrs. Brotherton's family.
