Ann Duffey Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Rest Haven Funeral Home & Cemetery - Hagerstown on Mar. 20, 2026.
Ann Shannon Duffey of Hagerstown, MD, born January 3, 1948, died March 17, 2026. Survived by three children, David Duffey, Beth Dearing and Susan Valentine, 6 grandchildren, Cody Valentine, Gunnar Valentine, Jesse Valentine, Samuel Dearing, Ella Duffey and Willow Duffey, and two sisters, Peggy Overcash and Jane Baer.

It is not possible to encompass all that she was in life and what she meant to the ones she left behind in a few short sentences. Each person that knew Ann, will have their own history, their own experience with her and I hope they will share those stories in remembrance of the life she lived. She was a sister twice, a wife twice, a mother three times, a grandmother six times, a nurse for 23 years and a friend many times over. She loved music and played the piano, hand bells, guitar, and percussion. She loved to read. In my childhood I remember her favorite book as Gone with the Wind and favorite movie as Doctor Zhivago. She was a creator and was talented with both a sketch pad and a sewing machine. She handmade much of my childhood clothing and continued to make special outfits all the way through my teenage years including my prom gown. I remember a particularly fabulous pair of quilted Holly Hobby pants when I was 8 that she made me because she couldn't pass up the bargain on the fabric. She loved growing plants in the backyard and taking care of animals. She guided her children through the care of so many pets from hermit crabs, goldfish, hamsters and gerbils, to rabbits, cats and dogs. She used her nursing skills to rescue injured wild creatures we brought home and encouraged our desire to protect nature. She loved trips to the beach in October when the air was cooler but the water still warm, sleepovers in the cabin her parents owned in the woods outside of Waynesboro, and camping trips to Assateague Island where the wild pony's would sometimes try to enter the tent. I remember Halloween parties and mom making our costumes with the box of props she kept in the attic. She taught me to ice skate on the frozen pond at Pangborn park and I thought she was incredible because she could skate backwards. She had a great laugh, so much larger than she was, and a lovely smile. She sang with the radio in the car and whistled when she was happy. She will be missed.
