Obituary of Ann T. Ferris
Virginia Ann Todarelli Ferris, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2026.
Born in 1931, Ann grew up in
Union, New Jersey and attended the Vail Deane School before furthering her education at Vassar College, where she graduated with distinction. It was at Vassar where she met the love of her life, Richard Ferris, whom she married on a beautiful summer evening, at Connecticut Farms Presbyterian Church. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership.
Ann and Richard settled first in New Jersey before welcoming their daughter Susan in 1955. In 1958, they moved to
Darien, Connecticut, where their son Richard was born in 1960. Over the years, the family lived in
Westfield, NJ, and
Yardley, PA, before happily returning to Darien in 1972 to be near dear friends from their early marriage days.
A lifelong learner, Ann pursued graduate studies in education and later earned a second Master's degree in communications from Fairfield University.
Her dedication to service was reflected in her volunteer work as a docent for the Junior League at the Trenton State Capitol, in leadership roles with the League of Women Voters, and as an active member of AAUW. She also served on the board for Pilgrim Towers, a housing complex in Stamford, for many years.
Her talent for writing found a home in published pieces in The New York Times and in her own column, The View from Grandma's House, for the Darien Review. " The View from Grandma's House," captivated readers with her humorous reflections on local politics, family anecdotes, and the societal issues of her time. Her writing for esteemed publications like The New York Times showcased her sharp intellect and engaging prose.
Few things delighted her more than her love for animals-especially collies. She nurtured a special bond with her collie Gwennie, whose offspring brought joy to many families. She joyfully raised the puppies, keeping two of them to form a beloved trio that traveled with her and brought constant companionship. Ann was a fierce supporter of Animal rights groups and many of them were recipients of her financial help.
After the family built a home in Chatham, Cape Cod, Ann spent many cherished summers there with friends and family.
Widowed at 57, she met life's challenges head-on, learning to invest and manage her finances independently, repair appliances, and tackle countless tasks with determination and grace.
Ann is survived by her daughter Susan Ferris (Bruce Rights) and son Richard Ferris (Julianna); her grandchildren Amy Corso (Christopher), Timothy Ferris (Allie), Sarah Kate Ferris, and Christopher Ferris; and her great-grandchildren Anthony, Thomas, and Emma.
She will be remembered for her intelligence, humor, warmth, and unwavering devotion to her family, friends, and the many causes she held dear.
In honor of Ann's life, a memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Darien on March 14, 2026, 2PM, where family and friends will gather to celebrate her remarkable journey and enduring spirit. We will celebrate her life at her home afterwards.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pet Animal Welfare Society of CT (PAWS)
504 Main Avenue, Norwalk, CT 06851, reflecting Ann's lifelong commitment to advocacy, social justice and animal welfare.
