Richard Champlain Obituary

Old Lyme - Richard Wadleigh Champlain, lifelong resident of Old Lyme, passed away March 18, 2026. He was the long-time partner of Shirley Ross Brown. He was born Oct. 29, 1934, in New London, the son of Orrin and Leanna (Wadleigh) Champlain.

Richard was a highly intelligent man with interests, expertise, and skills in many different areas. He was also very humble and enjoyed life's simple pleasures. Richard was an avid mineral collector, a hobby his father introduced to him as a young boy, that became a lifelong passion. He and Shirley traveled all over the United States and Canada visiting mines and quarries.

Richard graduated from LaSalle College in Philadelphia and earned two master's degrees from Fairfield University. His love of learning led him to the teaching profession. Richard taught in the Old Saybrook school system for many years until his retirement. In addition, he coached boys basketball and led his team to many victories.

Richard was also a professional drummer. He and his band played in many local establishments, including the Light House Inn in New London.

Burial will private. Donations in Richard's Memory may be made to: Alzheimer's Association, 10 Executive Drive, Farmington, CT 06032. To sign the online guestbook, visit www.fultontherouxoldlyme.com.
