Anna Sue (Barnes) Hargrove, age 92, of Little River, died January 13, 2026, after a lengthy illness.
She was born on March 30, 1933, near Belton, second of three children and the only daughter of James L. (Tess) Barnes and Lydia Grace (Culpepper) Barnes.
She spent her early years in the Taylors Valley community on their family farm and attended school in the two-room Taylors Valley School through the eighth grade. She graduated from Belton High School in 1951. During her high school years, she played basketball and softball. She married Leonard W. Hargrove from Heidenheimer on July 19, 1951. In their early years of marriage, she was a mother and housewife, but during the 1970s she worked for Belton ISD as a teacher’s aide and in the 80s provided daycare for children in her home. She and her husband Leonard lived in Belton most of their adult lives, raising three children. She was very active in supporting her children in sports, band, and academic activities in Belton public schools and especially Belton High School.
After Leonard took early retirement, they bought a farm in Wilson Valley near Little River, where they raised cattle, were active gardeners, and grew and/or preserved a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables from the farm. In her later years she enjoyed attending sports and band events of her grandchildren, playing Texas 42 dominoes with friends and family, and hosting family members in her home until her illness in early 2025. Her greatest pride was in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and anyone whom she met would soon learn all about them and what they were up to.
She was an active member of Taylors Valley Baptist Church since 1943, when she was ten years old and continued to be active for 80+ years, serving as a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher, and joyful member of the church choir.
She is survived by one brother, Gary Barnes (wife Janet) of Georgetown; three children, two sons, William L. (Bill) of Salado and Bryan L. (wife Judy) of Midland, and one daughter, Sheri A. Yerrington (husband Ken) of Georgetown; eight grandchildren: Anne Graham (husband Darrell) of Ft. Worth, Bob Hargrove (wife Laura) of Temple, Paul Hargrove (wife Riley) of Minneapolis, MN, Crista Nickell (husband Michael) of Midland, Cody Hargrove (wife Roselyn) of Midland, Amy Kerley (husband Aaron) of Hutto, Chad Yerrington (wife Henni) of Temple, and Jay Yerrington of Round Rock; twelve great-grandchildren; and eight nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, and her older brother J.L. Barnes.
Visitation will be held at Dossman Funeral Home in Belton on Saturday, January 17, from 5:00 -7:00 pm. Services will be held at Taylors Valley Baptist Church on Monday, January 19, at 10:00 am, with interment to follow at Wilson Valley Cemetery.
