COOKEVILLE CHAPEL - Anna Louise Murphy, born on January 30, 1955, in Cookeville, Tennessee, passed away on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. She was a beloved member of the Cookeville and Sparta community and a cornerstone of family life, leaving behind countless cherished memories.
Anna's professional journey began at Russell Stover in Cookeville, where her work ethic and creativity flourished. Her love for cooking quickly led her to local restaurants, where her talent shone through. Not one to settle for the ordinary, Anna took a bold step and opened her own soul food restaurant in Sparta, Annie Mae's Cafe. This venture not only showcased her culinary skills but also became a gathering place for the community, filled with joy and laughter.
She was known for her quirky, light-hearted persona, bringing fun and compassion into the lives of everyone she met. Anna’s joyful spirit resonated deeply with friends and family alike. Anna loved watching Tennessee Titans football and Memphis Grizzlies basketball games. She cherished gardening, finding peace and joy among her plants, while her love for dancing brought her pure happiness during many gatherings with family and friends. She also found joy in word search puzzles, a pastime that intertwined relaxation with a fun challenge, showcasing her vibrant character. As a proud Christian, she was an active member of Burton's Chapel Methodist Church, where she found a sense of belonging and purpose.
Family was paramount in Anna's life. She is survived by her daughter, Sonya Murphy; her son, James Murphy; her bonus son, Roy James "Junebug" Murphy Jr.; her brothers, Bob Gist (Patsy) and James "Pop" Gist; her grandchildren, Parker and Landon Murphy; and a host of nieces and nephews who will carry her memories forward.
She was preceded in death by her special father Jim Peake, mother and step-father, Virginia Pearl Gist Click and Alfred Paul Click; her first husband, Roy James Murphy Sr.; her companion, Julius Reynolds; her brother, Herman Gist; and her infant sister, Margaret Frances Gist. Each of these individuals held a special place in her heart, and they will be remembered alongside her.
A funeral service to honor Anna will be at 12 p.m. Saturday April 5 at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. Rev. Diantha McLeod will officiate. Visitation for friends and family will be Saturday from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. Anna will be laid to rest at Algood Heritage Cemetery.
