Anna H. Scarlett, a woman of unwavering kindness, boundless generosity, and an abundant capacity for love, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2023 after a long battle with Alzheimer's, a terrible disease. Anna was born on September 5, 1936, in Sayre, PA, the daughter of the late George and Myrtle (Reynolds) Hanford. She will be remembered for her vibrant spirit, her nurturing heart, a wonderful mother and her dedication to serving others as a nurse for 20 years.
Anna was a graduate of Nichols High School, class of 1954, and furthered her education at the Arnot Ogden School of Nursing where she earned her RN degree and was a popular figure in many social and leadership clubs. Her desire to serve others led her to a fulfilling career in healthcare, beginning at the Ithaca Memorial Hospital. Anna then continued to nurture and care for others at the Willow Point Nursing Home, until she retired in 1999.
Her love for her family was evident in every aspect of her life. She was the proud mother of Rick (Wendy) Scarlett, Catherine (Calvin) Scarlett, Kevin (Kelly) Scarlett, and Matthew (Monica DiGialleonardo) Scarlett, She cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren Veronica (Justin), Katrina, Christopher, James (Kyra), Lauren, Kevin Jr, Roman, Hudson, and Stirling. Anna was also blessed with her great-granddaughter Cassandra. Her brother and sister-in-law Donald (Marda) Hanford held a special place in her heart; she will also be missed by several nieces, nephews and their families.
Anna found joy in tending to her garden and had a unique fondness for collecting teapots. Anna was also a motorcycle enthusiast, relishing the freedom and thrill of the open road. She enjoyed swimming and loved music, playing saxaphone in the high school band. She particularly enjoyed Frank Sinatra, standing on a chair at one of his concerts in order to see better.
Throughout her life, Anna was an active member of her community. She was a devoted member of All Saints Church and Grace Episcopal Church for many years. Over the years, she also participated in the debate club, women's bridge club, and Johnson City Child Study Club. Her love for the outdoors was evident in her passion for horseback riding, and she also found creating memories in scrapbooking, a hobby that allowed her to preserve and cherish precious memories.
Anna's life was a testament to her loving nature, her kindness, and her generosity. She touched the lives of many with her warmth and compassion, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire those who knew her. We were truly blessed for the love and care shown to Mom from the caring hospital staff at Chenango Memorial Hospital ~ thank you for all you did. Mom will be deeply missed, and her spirit will live on in the hearts of her loved ones and the many lives she has touched throughout her remarkable life.
A private family gathering will be held at the convenience of the family. Memories and condolences may be shared by visiting her guestbook at www.sutfinfuneralchapel.com. If you have a special photo of Anna, please email it to [email protected] so it can be included in the family memories of her.
