After 75 years on this earth, Annette Marie Halbert (née Ely) joined her Lord in heaven on May 1, 2025. Annette suffered a seizure and fell at home in Pipe Creek, Texas, and spent one week in intensive care prior to her passing.
Annette was born and raised in Lamar, Colorado to Vernon and Hazel Ely and lived a happy childhood with brothers Dale, Keith, & Walter. She took her first job outside the home at 13 years old at a local restaurant and used the money she earned to attend Lamar Community College and Western State College, leaving the latter prior to completing her degree due to personal circumstances. She was married in Houston, Texas, and gave birth to two boys, whom she would raise in San Antonio, Texas.
Annette started her career as a secretary but was a quick study and a hard worker. She learned to program computers in COBOL on the job at a time when most people had never even touched a computer. Her newfound expertise led her to many long days and late nights working but also led to a long and successful career in information systems, technology, and management. Her managers, co-workers, and employees alike appreciated her humble and kind nature and tireless work ethic, and many credit her with an important impact on their careers or lives.
Annette was a loving and kind single-parent with seemingly inexhaustible patience. This was very important in the rearing of two rambunctious boys. In those two boys, Kyle and Durbin, though God did not give her more than she could handle, He certainly gave her all she could manage after a long day at work! In addition to providing a loving home, she found time and energy to get them to soccer, T-ball, and Cub Scouts. Her sons look back with deep appreciation on the innumerable sacrifices their mother made to give them the best life possible.
Annette was single for over 20 years before meeting the man with whom she would spend the rest of her life, Ernest Karlton Halbert, in 2001 when fate nudged them together one evening on the square-dancing floor. After several years of long walks, heartfelt talks, and shared laughs, they were married on April 4th, 2004 (04/04/04 so Karlton would never forget their anniversary). Shortly after they wed, Annette surprised Karlton by buying a dream property for the couple to move into, and they lived happily together in a beautiful house on 25 acres in Pipe Creek, Texas. Karlton and Annette spent many happy years exploring and tending to their property, hosting family at the pool, and spending their life together.
In 2017, the night before a family vacation to Washington DC, Annette suffered a debilitating stroke robbing her of her eyesight, much of her memory, many physical abilities, and sometimes even her kind and patient personality. Annette endured six months of rigorous therapy to regain as many skills as possible and she spent the next 7 years under the loving and loyal care of her husband Karlton with her faithful companion Chula by her side. Karlton was with her through kidney stones, colorectal cancer, countless doctor's appointments, and finally, her seizure, fall, and time in intensive care.
Annette led a humble and industrious life as a child of the Lord and she will be deeply missed by her husband of 21 years Karlton, brothers Dale and Keith, children Kyle and Durbin, stepchildren Darla, Derran, Brett, and Glenn, their spouses, numerous grandchildren, and many others who knew and loved her.
Funeral services for Annette will be conducted at Ebensberger-Fisher funeral home in Boerne, Texas and she will be laid to rest at the Pipe Creek Cemetery just a few miles from the home she and Karlton shared.
In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to Seton Home San Antonio, an organization dedicated to creating positive change in the lives of impoverished and at risk young single mothers. Donations can be made at setonhomesa.org.
