Anthony Gatt Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by W.C. Brady’s Sons, Inc Funeral Home on Feb. 14, 2024.
Anthony Gatt
Coxsackie – Anthony Gatt, 87, died on February 13, 2024, surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Greece, Tony was the son of Andrew and Marie Gatt of Chania. Tony was very devoted to his church and community. He was an usher at St. Mary's for 50 years, a member of the Knights of Columbus for 50 years, and coordinator of the Tuesday night rosary for 25 years. As devoted as he was to his church and community, his strongest commitment was to his family. He was a faithful, devoted husband and proud father of three boys. He was even prouder of his four grandchildren. He made great sacrifices to support his sons and grandchildren and could often be heard bragging about them.
Tony grew up on the island of Crete with his two brothers and two sisters. At age seven, his father was taken away by the Nazis and didn't return for seven years. At age 21, Tony moved with his family to London. That is where he met Alice Kelly, his future wife. They quickly fell in love and got married four months later. They immigrated to the United States in 1965 and settled in Coxsackie, NY, near Tony's brother John. Tony worked many jobs to help provide for his family. He waited tables, sold real estate, painted apartments, and worked at his brother's flea market well into his 80's.
Tony is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Alice Gatt of Coxsackie. He also leaves behind his three sons, Stephen (Cheri) Gatt of Voorheesville, Michael Gatt of Coxsackie, and Andrew (Julia Tarasova) Gatt of Durham, NC. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Ryan (Julia Pitts) Gatt of Mebane, NC, Amanda (Aaron) Holland of Albany, Daniel Gatt of the Netherlands, and Gregory Gatt of Durham, NC. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
Visitation at St. Mary's Church, 80 Mansion Street, Coxsackie, New York, will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2024 from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 noon, immediately followed by a mass.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to St. Mary's R.C. Church, Coxsackie, New York, or to the charity of your choice.
Arrangements for Anthony have been entrusted to The W.C. Brady's Sons, Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion Street, Coxsackie, New York, 12051.

Tony and his beloved wife of more than sixty years Alice Gatt were a wonderful couple. We are related through my mother's side of the family. Alice and Tony were exceptionally kind to myself and my siblings when we settled in the area fresh out of Ireland. I am saddened to learn that Tony passed but we must remember that death is a journey to a better place a happier place and a peaceful place.

My sincere condolences and prayers go out to Mrs. Gatt, Stephen and family! My sisters Shawn and Wendi, and my brother Guy and I will never forget the genuine caring and friendship offered to my parents, Ed and Cathy Tompkins by Alice and Tony. They enjoyed attending mass with your parents and often spoke about how kind and sweet they were.
Steve, my prayers to you my friend for healing in the next weeks and months by enjoying the memories of your Dad and hopefully this will bring you peace and some smiles. I know Jeff is looking out for you at this time! Love to you all, Penny

Condolences to the Gatt family. I remember the days of him and Alice came into the tops Market in Coxsackie. Great person to know, you'll be sadly missed.
