Anthony Japour Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Levitt-Weinstein Blasberg, Rubin-Zilbert Memorial Chapels on Mar. 11, 2026.
It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved Dr. Anthony Japour. Anthony was an extraordinary man whose compassion, intelligence, and vibrant spirit touched countless lives. He lived with purpose, curiosity, and an unwavering dedication to those he loved. Anthony was not only a cherished son, brother, uncle, and friend-he was also a visionary physician, a leader in global health, and a tireless advocate for those living with infectious diseases. His life's work and loving spirit will continue to resonate long after his passing.

Born with a natural gift for connecting with others, Anthony radiated a warmth that made everyone around him feel valued and appreciated. His laughter was unmistakable, his kindness effortless, and his generosity of heart truly rare. Whether through his work, his friendships, or his deep devotion to family, Anthony left an imprint that will endure for generations.

His journey began with an extraordinary mind and an insatiable curiosity. After earning his bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan and his medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, he embarked on a career defined by purpose and impact. Dr. Japour trained at Harvard Medical School with subspecialty training in infectious diseases, where he later served as an Assistant Professor of Medicine and received the prestigious American Foundation for AIDS Research Scholar Award. He also received research grants from the Pediatric AIDS Foundation, the NIH–NIAID K-11 Physician Scientist Award, and an NIH R01 grant. His career spanned more than 30 years of leadership in medicine, diagnostics, and biotechnology-an enduring testament to his lifelong commitment to healing and innovation.

Anthony was a devoted son to his parents, the late James and Anna Jean Japour, and a loving brother to Mary Ann Japour and brother-in-law to Stuart Stafman. He cherished his family deeply and took immense pride in being a caring uncle and steady, loving presence in the lives of his niece and nephew, Laura and Joshua, as well as his great-niece and great-nephew, Emma and Bradley. His family was his heart, and he supported them with unwavering love, guidance, and encouragement.

In his free time, Anthony embraced life with enthusiasm. He loved engaging in thoughtful conversation, building meaningful friendships, traveling, exploring the arts, and discovering new experiences. He had a brilliant mind, a compassionate soul, and a sense of humor that could brighten even the heaviest day. Those who knew him will always remember his thoughtful nature, his ability to listen deeply, and the way he made everyone around him feel seen.

He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His kind heart, infectious smile, and boundless love will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, dear friend, brother, uncle, and cherished family member. You will forever reside in our hearts. May Anthony's memory be for a blessing.

On behalf of several colleagues at the institute, and all of us who had the privilege of working with him over the past several years, we remember Anthony with great respect, gratitude, and affection. He was not only a passionate physician committed to advancing the cure of Type 1 Diabetes, but also a genuinely humble, kind, and thoughtful human being.

Anthony believed in the mission of the Diabetes Research Institute and was a strong supporter of the work to cure T1D. He brought encouragement, insight, and sincere commitment to this shared effort, and his support meant a great deal to many of us.

Those who worked with him will remember not only his professionalism and vision, but also his warmth, grace, and quiet humility. He was the kind of person who made collaboration meaningful and personal, and he left a lasting impression on everyone who had the opportunity to know him.

We will miss him greatly and will remember him with deep appreciation. Our heartfelt condolences go to his family, loved ones, and all whose lives he touched.

May he rest in peace.

Anthony,

Thank you for all your care, commitment, enthusiasm, and the passion you brought to everything you did. God placed you on this earth to share your knowledge and to support the search for a cure for diabetes, and we are deeply grateful for your hard work and dedication.

I still remember your last visit to the DRI and how you asked for your coffee with milk. It is a small memory, but one that always brings a smile to my face. I also keep your umbrella as a special reminder of you. I remember when you said, "Please keep it at the DRI for when it is raining." That simple gesture reflects the kindness and thoughtfulness that defined who you were.

Now God must have needed your help in Heaven, and that is why He called you. I believe He has a new mission for you there. Your spirit, generosity, and dedication will always remain with us. You touched so many lives, and your legacy will continue through the people you inspired and the work you helped advance.

You will always be remembered with gratitude, respect, and affection. Thank you for everything you gave to this world.

With heartfelt appreciation,
Julia Vargas

I am having trouble finding the right words. I am deeply shocked and saddened to learn of my dear friend's passing. As I was unable to arrange to be in Miami Beach this morning, I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to visit with Anthony last month. I will always remember his kind-hearted sprit, gentle manner, dry humor and witty intelligence. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to know him and know that every time I look at my beautiful Evan Nesbit painting, I will think of Anthony and the fun times I had with him. My deepest condolences to Mary Ann and Stuart and the rest of the family.

Rest In Peace, my dear friend and colleague Anthony. You have been a supporter of diabetes research for such a long time, providing invaluable contributions to our cause, from battling on my side in the fight to modernize FDA regulations in cellular therapies, to leading our efforts at iTolerance to bring to the clinic transformational strategies to eliminate anti-rejection drugs in pancreatic islet transplantation,
on the path to a cure of diabetes. You will be tremendously missed, and never forgotten. My deepest condolences to the Japour Family.

I am deeply saddened by this loss. Anthony was a dear friend and kindest human. I will forever carry our friendship in my heart and the many art dialogues that always turned into late nights and many plans. Life is so unpredictable, Anthony has just moved to Williams Island to be my neighbor and we had so much fun making all the plans - may he find an even more beautiful place for eternity. My deepest condolences to all of the Japour family.

Yesterday

My deepest condolences to the Japour Family. I was deeply saddened and stunned to learn of Anthony´s passing. We had gotten to know each other over the past several years through our involvement with Bioflorida. Anthony was a leader in the life sciences industry and deeply admired by all who knew him. Last year, BioFlorida bestowed on him its Entrepreneur of the Year Award for his work as CEO of iTolerance and recently appointed him Chair of our Southeast Chapter. He was completely dedicated to the success of the iTolerance in its mission to cure Type 1 Diabetes. Beyond that, as all who knew Anthony know, he was a Renaissance Man. And he cared so deeply for people - always seeking to support, mentor and lift others up. His generous heart extended to furry four-legged friends in need, like his beloved Junior, who he rescued from a dumpster a few months ago. He even brought Junior to our conference hotel so as not to leave him alone! I will miss our talks and our dinners at our conferences. I will miss his brilliance. Most of all, I will miss his decency and his sheer goodness. His memory will be a blessing to us all.

I was deeply saddened to learn about Tony's passing. We became fast friends at the University of Michigan in the late '70s and I considered him family. In the early '80s, he met me in Paris, where I was studying the summer before I graduated from college and we travelled south together - in France and then to Italy. There were many visits in Chicago, which was my hometown, and later in Boston and then Miami. I celebrated his 40th birthday with him in Lisbon. I traveled to Miami for the opening of his art gallery. Our paths diverged in the years that followed but we reconnected a couple of years ago when he was in New York. With the exception of a few gray hairs, he had hardly aged. I was in Ann Arbor a few weeks ago, for the first time in decades, and I visited the dorm where I had lived my freshman year. I have a vivid memory of looking out my dorm window and seeing Tony cross the courtyard in his large, wool overcoat. He made a striking impression, even then. Tony lived a very full life and I was lucky to have shared part of it with him. To his sister Mary and his family, I am so very sorry for your loss.

I am so devastated to hear Anthony was taken from us so soon. I saw Anthony on 2-27-26 at Temple Emanuel, and like he always was, he radiated warmth and love and his smile lit up the room. That is how I remember first meeting him barely a year ago, also at a Shabbat service. He gifted me a most beautiful Magen David with the Kabbalistic Sefirot attached to it on a special occasion, a gesture so thoughtful and generous given I had just recently met him. Even with all his successes, Anthony dressed casually, acted humbly, and was someone I deeply admired though I wish I could have gotten to know him better than I did. May Gd rest his soul.

Bob and I are SO devastated. Our dear friend since 1990´s unexpectedly passed away Monday night, Dr Anthony Japour & was only 66. Anthony lived on Shawmut Ave in the South End and was active in the Blackstone/Franklin Square Neighborhood Association serving as Vice President . He moved to Chicago and then to Miami in the late 90´s .
We always called him "Tony " and were SO close as friends for years . He was SO accomplished as a Physican specializing most of his career in infectious disease and went to Northwestern University Fineberg School of Medicine. He was a physican & research doctor at Mt Auburn & Beth Isarel Hospitals In Boston.
As a Physican, he was very active in the AIDS epidemic, and was a founder of a AIDS drug when he worked at Abbot Labs in Chicago and it saved thousands of people struggling with AIDS and HIV. Most recently he was CEO of a pharmaceutical company , iTolerance working on a cure for Type 1 diabetes.

Even though he lived in Miami, we would see each other 2-3 times a year and talk a couple of times a month.
We are SO so saddened of this loss and loved him SO much . May white light surround him forever . His service will be on Friday In Miami .
