Dr. Anthony Joseph Regine, 92, of Middletown, Rhode Island, formerly of Providence and Cranston, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Anthony, fondly known as Tony by family, friends, patients, and even grandchildren, was born in Providence on June 14, 1933. He was the son of the late Antonio and Elizabeth (Zarrella) Regine. Tony was a graduate of St. Pius School and Classical High School in Providence and often said they prepared him well for his college and professional education. He attended Brown University, earned his BA from Tufts University and his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery at the University of Maryland.
Tony married Angela (Pedorella) Regine on a beautiful June day in 1957. They first met as neighbors when their families' spent summers on Easton's Point in Middletown. A chance meeting that grew into a lifelong partnership. Tony and Angela lived in Baltimore while he completed his dental education. Immediately afterward, they spent two years at Fort Meade, Maryland, where he served as a Captain in the United States Army Dental Corps. From there, they returned to RI where Tony opened his dental practice on Reservoir Avenue in Cranston. He practiced for more than 40 years and was widely respected for his dedication to patient care. Tony was so beloved by his dental patients that most were willing to wait hours to see him. For many years he volunteered his dental services through DCYF for members of the community who otherwise lacked access to care.
Inclusive, generous, and committed to adventure, Tony loved bringing people together. He would plan a party for just about anything and all were welcome. Holidays included friends, in-laws, and extended family, the more the merrier. Tony was a rebel at heart, imparting no shortage of mischief on his grandchildren and their friends at Camp-Hav-Sum-Fun, the family home-base.
Tony was known for his love of the arts, classical and jazz music, travel, fashion sense and his deep commitment to family and friends. Tony and Angela passed their love of the arts to their children and grandchildren, bringing them to many plays, musicals and events in Providence and New York City.
He was actively involved in fundraising and community efforts throughout his life. Tony believed these events served an important purpose while raising support for meaningful causes. True to his spirit, he often said that if people were gathering to help others, they should also enjoy themselves. Creating joy in all things was something he did naturally and reflected the way he lived his life.
To that end, Tony served as president or board member of numerous organizations, including, The Autism Project, The Edward King House, AARP Rhode Island, The Japan America Society Rhode Island, Opera Providence, Advent House, Blackstone Academy, and Classical Alumni Association where he received the 'Distinguished Alumni Award.' The Women's Resource Center in Newport also honored Tony at a "Men Who Make a Difference" fundraiser. Most recently, he was a founding member of The Mike Renzi Musicianship Award at the University of Rhode Island, a scholarship that supports students in need of musical instruments and funds to travel for educational purposes.
His kindness and warmth left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him. Tony's charm and zest for life will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his daughters, Julia (Regine) O'Halloran, Karen Regine, Ellen (Regine) Kalhofer and her husband Richard Kalhofer; his son, Stephen A. Regine; and his grandchildren Darcey O'Halloran, Lauren O'Halloran, Charlotte O'Halloran, Victoria Kalhofer, Matthew Kalhofer and his fiancé Erin Heston, Isabel Regine, and Maxim Regine. He is also survived by his niece, Carolyn Watkinson, and nephews, John Bissonette, John Pedorella, Joseph Pedorella, Paul Bissonette and Robert Cellemme; and his sister-in-law Mal Pedorella.
He was predeceased by his wife, Angela (Pedorella) Regine; his sister Carol (Regine) Bissonette Cellemme, his brother-in-law Robert Cellemme; his son-in-law Kevin O'Halloran, husband of Julie; his brother-in-law Dr. A. Joseph Pedorella; and his nephew Dr. Christopher Pedorella.
The Regine family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses, and care givers for their compassionate care.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at 10:00 am at St. Mary's Church in Newport, RI.
