Anthony Rosenthal Obituary

ROSENTHAL, Anthony

Anthony David "Tony" Rosenthal, age 74, passed away on October 20, 2025.

Tony was a native Atlantan by way of Decatur. He was born at Crawford Long Hospital on August 25, 1951 to Leona and Sam Rosenthal. Other than short stays in Durham, NC, Thailand, and Alexandria, VA, Atlanta was home his entire life.

He attended St. Thomas More Catholic school, then Marist School, graduating in 1969. He received a degree in civil engineering (and a lifelong love of all things Blue Devil) from Duke University in 1973 before joining the Peace Corps, which sent him to Thailand.

Upon returning stateside, Tony was employed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources/EPD as a water supply engineer before becoming president of the family business, Rosenthal Metal Company. He then created RMC Services, Inc., whose crews did maintenance on autoracks at auto manufacturing plants in the Southeast. He later joined RSI Logistics, establishing an ethanol terminal in Alexandria, VA, before becoming a regional manager. He retired from RSI in in 2018.

Tony's primary love was his family. His children, for whom he had unconditional love, brought him special joy. He was ever-present in their childhoods, always willing to volunteer for their activities, including coaching their rec soccer teams.

A close second love was Duke basketball. Coach K began his storied career at Duke in 1980, the year Tony and Kathy married, and over the decades, the whole family cheered on the team each season, watching as many games as possible.

Tony also enjoyed playing cards, the piano, and Skee-Ball; cooking; and traveling. Every fall, the family went to Cloudland Canyon; every Easter, to Black Rock Mountain. In later years, Tony and Kathy ventured around the US and to Europe.

Tony is survived by his wife of 45 years, Kathy Layden; his daughter, Laura Hauer (Florian); and granddaughters, Emma and Alice of Marietta; son, Mark (Matt Norris) of Atlanta; brother, Randy of Norcross; and sister, Mina Dyson of Johns Creek; as well as beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.

The family will have a celebration of Tony's life in January.
