Anthony Michael Sclafani, 91, of Holiday City Berkeley section of Berkeley Township, NJ passed away on Saturday December 28, 2024, at home. He was a native of Brooklyn, NY, later moving to Staten Island in 1975, and retired to Berkeley Township, NJ in 2001.
Anthony had a deep passion for baseball and bowling. At the age of 16, Anthony pitched a no-hit shutout allowing the Ty Cobbs to capture Brooklyn's Kiwanis League title in June of 1950. From 1963 through 1973, he led Brooklyn's St. Athanasius Little League Baseball team as Head Coach, and later served as an Umpire for Staten Island's Little League Baseball teams from 1978. He was an active member of the NYC Transit Authority Bowling League for over 30 years and Team Captain for the Playdrome Bowling League in Toms River, NJ for 20 years.
In the early 1960's, Anthony had worked for a small Brooklyn based electronics company where he designed and developed a multi-wired harness ranging from 25 to 64 conductors later standardized under the Amphenol Cable Assembly with Sperry Corp.. In 1970, he was employed as a train mechanic with the NYC Transit Authority, repairing and modifying railroad cars. Anthony was a master craftsman inclusive of woodworking, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and home improvement.
He was blessed with and displayed creative talent and brilliant curiosity, was an artist, poet, champion punster, and a meticulously meticulous puzzle solver. He enjoyed participating in and volunteering for many endeavors throughout his life. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Brooklyn and Staten Island, a parishioner and Head Usher of St. Joseph RC Church in Toms River, and a long-standing member of the Variety and Drama Club, and the Melodiers in Holiday City Berkeley. He was a kind; compassionate; selfless; humorous; patient; and loving and devoted husband, father and friend.
He is survived by his wife Florence (nee Mannarino) Sclafani of 69 years; his Children and their spouses: Tory (Masumi), Lily Anne (Scott), Andrew (Karen), and Anthony (Josephine); 13 Grandchildren: Julie, Christine, Stephen, Garrett, AJ, Ashley, Kaitlyn, Mathew, Michael, Anthony, Samantha, Anthony, Ben; and 9 Great-Grandchildren: Marquis, Jayden, Dayvion, Alayna, Aaliyah, William, Foster, Adylynn, and Stephen.
Family will receive friends on Thursday January 2, 2025 from 4-8 pm at the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals 145 St. Catherine Blvd. Toms River, NJ. A Mass will be celebrated at 10am Friday January 3, 2025 at St. Joseph RC Church, Toms River, NJ. Committal will be Private. Condolences may be sent by visiting www.ryanfuneralhome.com.
