It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of A. Wayne Strain, a beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather. Wayne peacefully departed from this world on September 25, 2024, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri. He was born July 6, 1952, in Dayton, Ohio, to Everett Strain and Geraldine (Johnson) Strain. Wayne was a graduate of West Carrolton High School in West Carrolton, Ohio. He moved to Springfield, Missouri to attend Central Bible College. Wayne was a police officer in the Springfield Police Department for 13 years before sustaining an on-the-job injury. Later, he spent 12 years as a bailiff in the Greene County Courthouse. He loved deer hunting, fishing and the great outdoors, but was especially a big fan of the Cincinnati Reds baseball team and the Cleveland Browns football team. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family. He was given an extra 12 years with his family after receiving the gift of life via heart donation from the Norton family.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Gayla Strain; his loving daughters Carin Strain and Christina Baker (Matt Baker); his cherished grandchildren Arsen, Harper, Roland and Addison Baker; his caring sister, Pamela Strain; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial visitation to celebrate Wayne's life will be held at Greenlawn Funeral Home North on Saturday, October 5, 2024, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Wayne will be remembered for his kindness, his unwavering devotion to his family, his love of dogs, and the impact he made on those around him. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Donations can be made to the Springfield Police Officers Association or to the Greene County Humane Society in memory of Wayne. May he rest in eternal peace.

I worked with Wayne at SPD and went to many calls with him. I was with him when he sustained his injury. I always liked chatting with him, sharing deer and fishing stories and pictures. He was always proud of his service and family.
