Charles Allen Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Greenlawn Funeral Home North on Feb. 8, 2026.
Charles Ralph Allen, age 79, of Springfield, Missouri, passed away on January 31, 2026, at home with his devoted wife by his side.

Charles was born to James Wesley Allen and Mary G. Allen on May 29, 1946, in Springfield, MO. He was raised in Springfield, MO and graduated from Central High School in 1964. Charles was united in marriage to Maxine Allen on April 30, 1975, in Miami, Ok. Charles and Maxine shared 50 years of marriage before his passing on January 31, 2026. The couple were blessed and honored to raise 5 children together.

Charles was employed as a delivery truck driver with Sears for 40 years and was blessed to retire after many faithful years of service. Over the course of his career Charles held other jobs including a position as a basketball referee for the MSHSAA organization. When not working, he had many interests and pastimes including coaching youth in track and field with the Northside Express AAU track team, Mighty Might football, and volunteering for many years at the Hillcrest Invitational with his close friend Coach Jim Vaughn. Nothing, however, brought him more fulfillment than being with his family and traveling with them across the country. Charles was active in several sports which includes track, baseball, professional boxing, and his proudest moment as a Golden Glove Champion Boxer. He leaves to his legacy the 2025 Induction of the Springfield Sports Hall of Fame.

Charles will be remembered as a personable figure that never met a stranger. He was often described by others as a history buff of all things Springfield and any sport. When you left his presence, you went away with new knowledge and a sense of pride.

Charles was preceded in death by his mother, Mary G Allen, father, James Wesley Allen. brothers Everett Thomas "Sonny Allen ", William "Bill" Allen. niece Jennifer Brown, and grandson Jorian "JD" Caldwell.

Charles leaves those to celebrate his new address, wife Maxine Allen, brother Calvin Allen (Linda), sister Edith Brown, sister-in-love Ruby Small Thomas. Children John Wallace, Mia McQueen (Art), Montina Wallace, Shea Allen (Lacey), and Kellen Allen (Keia). Grandchildren Jacobi Wallace (Brittnay), Addison and Anna Wallace, Haley McQueen, Layla, Saige, and Scarlett Allen, Stejah, Kylah, Keirah, and Zerahiah Allen. Great grandchildren Rylee, Aria, and Kieston Wallace, Messiah Barnes. Nephew Terry Allen (Lydia) and Great nephew Terry Jr., a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitation for Charles Allen will be held on Saturday February 14, 2026, from 10:00-10:45am with the service to follow at 11:00am at Greenlawn North Funeral Home 3506 N National Ave Springfield, MO 65803.

Charlie ("Horse"), -
My friend, former schoolmate, Sears co-worker, and northside neighbor.
Your Homegoing has deeply saddened me, as I offer my condolences to your family and wife, Maxine, my childhood friend.
I have fond memories, as football teammates in junior high and high school our team won two city football championships.
For decades I have shared the story of witnessing your play as an outstanding defensive back during our 1963 Central high school football season - execute to perfection - a "dipped-shoulder, armless" torpedo tackling style, a technique later adopted by Deion Sanders, a feature that helped propel him into the NFL Hall of Fame. With your athletic prowess, I once witnessed you win a professional boxing match by technical knockout, with one powerful disabling blow to the opponent´s abdomen.
Upon your induction into the Spfld Athletic Hall of Fame - I proudly shared the video of you as the interviewee when you, with grace, articulated and accurately represented our Spfld Black community exercising diplomacy - in explaining the experiences and challenges that our community athletes faced during the social environment and times. Your induction into the Spfld Area Sports Hall of Fame was a well-deserved honor and recognition of your athletic accomplishments and contributions to the entire Spfld community.
A less known fact-You once assisted me in stopping the potential flashlight beating of a helpless, homeless man in our neighborhood by two overly aggressive law enforcement officers. Originally, you were reluctant to approach the sensitive situation for close observation. However, you stood beside me and controlled and encouraged me to exercise appropriate restraint - as we stood our ground to prevent a possible unjustified assault.
Heroic acts sometimes go unwitnessed, however, in retrospect - I believe - your willingness to "have my back" - protected two people that night. I was one of them. YOU were my hero that night.
In the later years I always appreciated the fellowship in which you welcomed and greeted me during our brief encounters.
The community will miss you my old friend, and so will I. Having men like you around - always made me - and the community feel safer. You were always a Stand-up Guy!
God Bless!
Peaceful Journey!
