Antonio Almeida Obituary

Antonio J. Almeida

January 4, 1956 - March 26, 2025

Salisbury, North Carolina - Antonio J. (Tony) Almeida -- a proud son of a Portuguese immigrant who fought with General George S. Patton in World War II -- was a passionate historian who lived a good life with multiple loves: of his family, Everyman's Bible Class, Vanderbilt University and Sigma Nu, the state of North Carolina, Duke Energy, and the Carolina Panthers. Tony died March 24 at Wake Forest Baptist hospital from a peritoneal bleed. He was 69.

Tony was born in Atlanta in 1956 to Betty Beckham, a retail saleswoman, and Antonio Almeida, who worked as a switchman for Southern Railway. Tony grew up in the Springlake neighborhood and graduated from Northside High School with honors. During high school, he became the regional operations manager for Baskin Robbins and was named Junior ROTC Brigade Commander, the highest-ranking cadet in Atlanta's public schools.

Tony studied history and economics at Vanderbilt University, focusing on the Cold War, and he formed his own band of brothers in the Sigma Nu fraternity.

After a short stint selling for Procter & Gamble, Tony joined Duke Power as a retail marketing assistant. He spent the next 32 years with Duke as an area manager, serving in Clemson, Shelby, Charlotte, High Point, and eventually Salisbury, working his way to become vice president of Economic Development. After retirement in 2011, he served as economic advisor to the Governor.

Tony was a weaver of friendships and connections, and he was deeply committed to the communities in which he lived and served. He was an elder at First Presbyterian Church and a trustee of Hood Theological Seminary. He joined a sister church, Second Presbyterian, for 12 years when his wife served as pastor. He chaired the Charlotte Regional Partnership and served on the North Carolina Community College System Foundation Board. He was active in the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce and United Way. He was a member of the North Carolina Economic Development Association, the South Carolina Economic Developers' Association, and the N.C. Chamber Manufacturing Council.

He was also a lifelong learner and purveyor of knowledge, taking courses at Hood and Catawba College. Tony began as a teacher in Everyman's Bible Class and moved to community builder. During the pandemic, he introduced the class to Zoom and the rest of the church soon followed. In 2017, he received the coveted Shucker of the Year award at the Annual Everyman's Oyster Roast.

Pops, as his grandchildren called him, found a way to bring joy to those around him. On summer vacations in Black Mountain, N.C., he created a tradition of buying his nieces and nephews one of whatever their hearts desired from a local drugstore. On holidays, he mixed a mean Bloody Mary for his extended family. And he always enjoyed watching The Wizard of Oz one more time.

Tony is survived by (and enjoyed the lifelong support of) Uncle Gordon, Aunt Joan, and Aunt Connie; his wife, Margaret; three sons, Joseph (Kathleen), Walter (Courtney), and Randy; seven grandchildren (Will, Julia, Bia, Lauren, A.J. Lana and Taylor); and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. His brother, Mike, died in 2024.

Tony was the glue that held us all together.

A celebration of his life will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Salisbury at 11 a.m. on April 5. Visitation and reception following service.

I had the pleasure of working with Tony at Duke's Customer Service Center in Charlotte. He was a force of nature, full of energy & enthusiasm, and a ready, winning smile. My heart and prayers are with his family and all who love him as they navigate this painful time. May the God of all comfort fill and surround each of you with His balm of peace.

Pat and I were shocked and saddened to hear about the loss of Tony. He was an amazing and great guy and we are all better for just knowing him. Tony taught me so much about working with people. He had a gentle but firm way of advising and counseling. He was key in making sure all our projects were successful!

He was a great teacher. We attended a Customer Conference in Baltimore several years ago. After the last session of the day Pat and I went out to Ft. McHenry to tour the site that inspired Fransis Scott Key to write the "Star Spangled Banner." On the boat we ran into Tony. He was better than a tour guide. He led us all around the fort explaining and discussing how the fort played such a big role in our history. I don´t remember much about the conference, but I will never forget how Tony took us under his wing and showed us around that day. We will miss him.

I had the good fortune of working for Tony at Duke Energy''s Customer Contact Center in the late 90s / early 2000s. Tony served as an executive sponsor for major projects that I managed and even though he had many other duties he never failed to check in to see how things were going and to step in if his attention was needed. He made sure to let all of us know how much he appreciated the work we were doing. He led by walking around. After successful completion of one project, Tony gifted me with a great quality pen which to this day reminds me of him. I will always remember his energy, his passion for serving customers, and how he made everyone around him feel. Our deepest condolences to the family. May you find peace in the memories you shared and in the support of friends and each other. Tony was a great man and a good friend.

I wanted to take a moment to share some memories and express my heartfelt gratitude for having known Tony. Tony hired me at Duke Energy, and I was fortunate to be his Executive Assistant for many years. Over time, he became a very dear friend to me. He never missed my birthday or my daughter's birthday and always made it a point to call and check in on us. We would often meet up for lunch or dinner, and I will forever cherish every moment I spent with him. I feel so incredibly lucky that my daughter got to meet him.

My last text with Tony was on my daughter Sophie's fourth birthday, March 6, 2025. He had texted to wish her a happy birthday. I would give anything to tell Tony just how much he meant to me. One of my favorite memories of Tony is when he surprised me at a UFC event at the Spectrum Arena in Charlotte. I had told him I was going, how excited I was, and even sent him a picture of my ticket. Tony never understood why I liked watching cage fighting. I will never forget sitting in my seat and hearing someone call my name. I looked over, and there was Tony with his unforgettable smile. He had bought a ticket next to me because he wanted to see what it was all about. He stayed for the entire event, and we laughed and had the best time.

I will always cherish our talks about the love he had for his grandchildren, our predictions for the Panthers, and the times when his mother-in-law lived with him and Margaret. Tony, Sophie and I are so incredibly grateful that you were a part of our lives. We will love and miss you every single day.

Tony, was the first person I met at the YMCA Spin Class he always made a point of getting to know the new person in the class and always had a giant smile along with a keen sense of how to make someone feel included! I so want to be even half the person he was! I will miss him dearly.
