Warwick - Antonio Cotta,94, a cherished soul and beloved patriarch, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 10, 2025, at the Sunnyview Nursing Home in Warwick. Born on April 23, 1931, in Providence, Rhode Island, Antonio was a man whose life was as rich and fulfilling as the waters he loved to navigate.
Antonio was the devoted husband of the late Hortense (Saial) Cotta and a loving father to his daughters, Diana Guevremont and her husband Butch of Warwick, Joanne Burgess and her husband Ronnie of Vermont, and Mary Ann Mello and her husband Stephen of Woonsocket. He carried with pride his heritage as the son of the late Joseph and Phoebe (Santos) Cotta. Although he mourned the loss of his sisters, Phoebe Cotta-Paquin and Amelia Jean Cotta, he found joy in the close bond he shared with his nephew Larry DeFreitas of Warwick.
Antonio's legacy extended to his adored grandchildren, Ronnie Burgess, Joey Burgess, and Chelsea Rosario, and he was blessed to be a great grandfather to Shayna Diane Rosario and Ronald Dennis Burgess. His role as a grandfather was one of his greatest joys, and the stories and lessons he shared will continue to shape their lives for years to come.
A man of the sea and a laborer by trade, He was Merchant Marine, Antonio was a proud member of the local Union 271 Laborers' Union. His hands, marked by years of hard work, were a testament to his dedication to providing for his family. His time as a commercial fisherman spanned many years, and the sea was a second home to him, where he felt at peace and in his element.
Antonio lived in Riverside since the 1970s, where he was a well-known figure in the community. His love for the water was evident in his hobbies; he was an avid fisherman, a skilled lobsterman, and a valued member of the Portuguese Sports Club of Providence. Antonio's creative spirit could often be found in the way he crafted his fishing nets or repaired his boat, always ready for the next catch.
Those who knew Antonio would describe him as a creative, loving, and handy individual. He had an innate ability to fix and build, to create and nurture. His warm smile and generous heart made him a friend to many. Antonio's presence was a comforting constant in the lives of those who loved him, and his stories, told with a twinkle in his eye, will be dearly missed.
As we bid farewell to Antonio Cotta, we celebrate a life lived with passion, a life of love and dedication to his family and community. His spirit, as vast and deep as the ocean he cherished, will continue to inspire and guide us. Antonio's journey on this earth may have come to a gentle close, but the ripples of his influence will be felt for generations to come. Rest in peace, Antonio; your memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing you.
