Antonio J. Sousa, born on October 20, 1943, in Povoação, São Miguel, Açores, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2026, at the age of 82. He was the beloved son of the late Pedro Joaquin Sousa and Maria dos Anjos Medeiros. Antonio immigrated to the United States on July 10, 1968, where he built a life rooted in hard work, family, and community.
Along with his devoted wife, Edmea, Antonio owned and operated Paramount Cleaners on Smith Street in North Providence for many years, retiring in 2005.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Edmea; his two daughters, Edmea Sylvestre and her husband, Mark, and Eliza Sousa-Medeiros and her husband, Paul; and his cherished grandchildren, Yara and Tiago Sousa-Medeiros. He is also survived by his sister, Odete Rebelo and her husband, Manuel, of Canada, as well as many nieces and nephews. Antonio was predeceased by his sisters, Ines Teixeira, Olga Medeiros, and Eliza Fernandes.
Antonio’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to his doctors and caregivers for their compassionate care during his illness, including Dr. Christopher Azzoli and his team at Rhode Island Hospital, Dr. Amir Alizadeh, Mayumi Shoi Parker, FNP-C, Dr. John Laddeto, and Dr. Therese Slomka.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, from 8:00–10:15 a.m. at the Robbins Funeral Home, 2251 Mineral Spring Avenue, North Providence, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony Church, 32 Lawn Avenue, Pawtucket. Burial will follow at Mount St. Mary Cemetery, Pawtucket.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Antonio’s memory to the American Cancer Society at cancer.org.
