Luis F. Sousa, 85, of Lowell, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 12, 2026 at Tufts Medical Center in Boston with his family by his bedside after a period of declining health. He was the beloved widower of the late Amelia M. (Ferreira) Sousa with whom he shared married life for 59 years before she passed away in 2022.

A son of the late Raul de Sousa and the late Maria da Ascuncao (Patricio) de Sousa, he was born March 14, 1940, in Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal and was raised, educated, and worked in construction there. In September of 1993, he came to the United States with his family, making their home in Lowell. He worked as a Baker at Old Mother Hubbard while in Lowell for about 8 years before his retirement.

As a devout Christian man, he prayed daily. Most recently he was a dedicated communicant of Trinity Episcopal Church in Milford. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and the outdoors. In particular, he took great pride in tending to his grounds and gardens. He was a lifelong futbol fan and ardent supporter of S.L. Benfica

He is survived by his daughter, Cidalia Tavares and her husband, Paulo, of Lowell, his sons, Luis DeSousa of Fall River, Silvino DeSousa of Lowell and Carlos DeSousa and his husband, Pedro Hernandez, of Milford. Additionally, he is survived by his grandchildren, Gary Tavares, Derek Tavares, Raquel DeSousa, Roberto DeSousa, Ruben DeSousa, Ronaldo DeSousa, Ashley DeSousa and Jordyn, Miguel and Erick Hernandez, and his sister, Diolinda Cordeiro of Sao Miguel

Besides his parents and his wife, he was also predeceased by his siblings, the late Antonio Sousa, the late Joao Sousa, the late Raul Sousa Jr and Jose Sousa.

His funeral took place privately and he was laid to rest with his beloved wife at St. Mary Cemetery in Tewksbury. Arrangements by the MCDONOUGH FUNERAL HOME, 14 HIGHLAND STREET, LOWELL 978-458-6816. Find us on facebook or use this website to send the family a message at any time.
