Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bradley Funeral Home - Marlton on Nov. 7, 2025.
Dr. Anusuya Balasundaram, whose profound compassion and instinctive kindness were a steadying comfort and at times a lifeline to her friends, family, and patients, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2025, from breast cancer, with her mother and sister at her side. She was 54.
A gifted psychiatrist, Anusuya possessed the kind of intelligence that revealed itself not just through what she said but also through how intently she listened. She had a way of making others feel fully understood, often punctuating the heaviest conversations with a flash of dry humor that never failed to let some light back in. Even as she navigated her own illness with quiet courage, her impulse was to reach outward: to comfort others, talk them through their worries, and offer the thoughtful, clear-eyed support that those lucky enough to be in her life came to depend on.
Her niece and nephew, Asha and Kiran Madison, were among her greatest joys, and she delighted in every moment of their growing up. Together, they celebrated holidays and birthdays, enjoyed pumpkin picking excursions and aquarium visits, even swam with dolphins during an unforgettable Disney cruise. She proudly cheered at Asha's dance recitals and at Kiran's jazz band concerts, took Asha shopping in New York City, and watched football with Kiran, just as she had with her father when she was a child. Kiran attributes his devotion to football, and specifically to the Eagles, whose games they later attended together, to his aunt.
Anusuya was born on January 26, 1971, in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, to Shantha and Appiah Balasundaram. When she was six months old, her family moved to the United States, eventually making their home in Moorestown, NJ. There she formed friendships that lasted a lifetime and graduated from Moorestown High School in 1989.
She married Jeevaka Sritharan in 2001, a partner with whom she shared not only her love of music and cats but also her birthday, as the two were born on the very same day and year. After their marriage, they settled in Philadelphia, and most recently, Jersey City, a move that allowed them to indulge their love of Manhattan.
A graduate of Lafayette College and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Anusuya worked for 18 years at Hampton Hospital in Westhampton, NJ, where she was appointed Medical Director in 2018. Her dedication to her patients was matched by the grace and empathy she brought to all who knew her.
Anusuya is survived by her mother, husband, sister Anoja Madison, niece and nephew. She was preceded in death by her father.
Visitation will be from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm, on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at the Bradley Funeral Home, 601 Rt 73 South and Evesham Rd in
Marlton, NJ. A memorial service will begin at 4:00 pm, at the funeral home.
